Hiva Oa essentially organises around the cultural pilgrimage at Atuona and the excursion to the Puamau tikis, complemented by some secondary hikes and visits.
Pilgrimage at Atuona (1 day): Calvaire seaside cemetery (on the heights above the village, accessible by a 15-20 min uphill walk — Paul Gauguin and Jacques Brel graves a few metres apart, striking panorama over Tahauku Bay — moment of emotion). Paul Gauguin Museum (at the centre of Atuona, reproductions of his Marquesan works, reconstruction of the 'Maison du Jouir', detailed biography of his life at Atuona 1901-1903 — entry €6). Jacques Brel Space (next to the Gauguin Museum, restored Jojo plane — Beechcraft Twin Bonanza, films, photos and memories of Brel's Marquesan life 1975-1978 — entry €6). Excursion to Puamau valley (1 day): 4x4 with driver-guide from Atuona (1 h 30 paved road, spectacular panoramas on the east coast). Visit of the me'ae Iipona with its monumental tikis (Takaii tiki 2.67 m — the largest in the Marquesas, Maki Taua Pepe tiki giving birth, several other tikis and petroglyphs). Swimming in the Puamau river, picnic lunch. Prices: €80-120/person with lunch.
Hikes (dry season): Mont Temetiu ascent (1,276 m, 8-10 h round trip, demanding trek for experienced hikers with Marquesan guide mandatory), Hanapaaoa valley (lush tropical valley, waterfalls, archaeological sites — 4-6 h loop), Eiaone petroglyphs (valley west of Atuona, accessible by 4x4 and short walk), Hanatekuua beach (isolated black sand beach, accessible by 4x4 or hike).
Marquesan tattooing: Hiva Oa shelters several renowned Marquesan tattooists (notably Felix Fii) who practise the ancestral art of tatau. A traditional tattoo session based on your personal story is a unique experience — living Marquesan souvenir for life. Prices: €200-500 depending on size and complexity.
Wood sculpture and crafts: visit of Marquesan craftsmen workshops at Atuona and in the valleys (miniature tikis in rosewood or mi'o wood, traditional utensils, sculptures). Direct purchase from craftsmen at prices significantly lower than Papeete shops.
