Central Cuba revolves around an exceptional colonial quadrilateral: Trinidad to the south (the most iconic), Cienfuegos to the west (the most French), Santa Clara to the north (the most revolutionary) and Sancti Spíritus to the east (the most discreet). Four cities within 150 km, each with its personality, palette and relationship to Cuban history. It is the densest concentration of colonial heritage on the island — and probably the most rewarding region for anyone wanting to understand Cuba beyond Havana.
The ideal itinerary forms a loop from Havana. Day one: transfer Havana → Cienfuegos (4h, Viazul bus €22 or private car €120-150). One night is enough to discover the Pearl of the South — Parque Martí (central square), Teatro Tomás Terry, Palacio de Valle (Moorish architecture on the bay), sunset walk on the cienfueguero Malecón. Day two: transfer Cienfuegos → Trinidad (80 km, 1h30 by colectivo taxi €15-20 per person). Three nights on site to soak up the city (Plaza Mayor, colonial museums, Casa de la Música, cobbled lanes), do a half-day at Ancón beach and an excursion to the Valle de los Ingenios.
Day five: transfer Trinidad → Santa Clara (90 km, 2h by colectivo taxi). One night for Che's city — Mausoleum and Memorial, Armoured Train Museum, Parque Vidal. Day six: return to Havana (270 km, 4h by Viazul bus or car). With 8-10 nights, add 1-2 nights in Sancti Spíritus (lesser-known colonial city with intact charm) and a day hiking at Topes de Collantes from Trinidad.
