Cayo Coco is mainly organised around beach and wildlife. The main beaches are freely accessible by the perimeter road: Los Flamencos beach (8 km, fine white sand, turquoise water, beach restaurants), Las Coloradas beach (ideal for snorkelling, reef accessible on foot) and Larga beach (the most deserted). On Cayo Guillermo (30 min by taxi via the causeway), Pilar beach is unforgettable — 5 km of extraordinarily fine white sand, transparent turquoise sea, the Caribbean's highest sand dunes (15 m), coral reef 200 m from shore.
Water activities are included at most resorts: kayak, paddleboard, windsurfing, sailing catamaran. Snorkelling from Las Coloradas or Pilar beach is exceptional (reef 100-200 m out). Diving is organised via ACUA and Marlin centres (€50-90 for 2 dives): sites La Jaula, Las Coloradas, the Las Brujas wreck. Deep-sea fishing is legendary in the area (Hemingway fished off Cayo Guillermo): half-day outings €250-400 for 4 people (blue marlin, sailfish, wahoo, dorado).
Land excursions let you discover the island's wildlife and nature. Flamingo viewing in Laguna La Redonda and Laguna Salada de la Leche (€30, boat trip, sunrise) — unmissable. Cueva del Jabalí (cave on Cayo Coco, used by the Spanish, €15). Dolphin excursion at Cayo Guillermo (€60, swimming with captive dolphins — ethically questionable, avoid). Catamaran to Cayo Media Luna (deserted island, €80-100 per person, full day with lobster lunch).
Off-archipelago excursions are long but possible. Trinidad (4-5h drive, €80-120) for a day — tiring but opens a window on colonial Cuba. Sancti Spíritus (3h, €60-80) lesser-known colonial city. Remedios (1h30 on the mainland facing Cayo Coco, €40-60) — charming small colonial town with a baroque cathedral. If possible, combine your stay with a transfer to Havana (domestic flight 1h) for 3 cultural nights before or after Cayo Coco.
Evenings centre on resort entertainment (cabarets, theme nights, internal discotheques) — no nightlife outside the resorts (no village, no outside restaurants). The Casa de la Música Cayo Coco (open to all, in the El Pueblo shopping centre) programmes salsa and timba orchestras.
