Day by day

  1. 1
    Day 1

    Arrival Pula (Istria)

Flight Paris-Pula (2h direct, seasonal April-October via Transavia or easyJet, €150-300 round-trip). Off-season: connection via Zagreb or Venice Marco Polo + 1.5h drive. On arrival, car rental (category B, €35-55/day depending on season, Sixt, Europcar, Avis) — book 2 months ahead for May-October, local fleet is limited.

Drive airport → Pula centre (15 min). Settle in an apartman inside the old town (€60-110/night) or hotel Park Plaza Histria (€110-160/night) on Verudela promenade. First ritual: Roman amphitheatre illuminated at dusk — outdoor view free, spectacular from Flaciusova street. It's one of the 6 best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world (1st century, 23,000 seats), still used for summer concerts (Pula Film Festival, July).

Dinner at Konoba Batelina (Banjole, 10 min by car, book 2-3 weeks ahead, €60-80/pers.) — Istria's best fish restaurant, or more accessible Konoba Boccaport in the centre (€35-50/pers., octopus salad speciality, brodet). Drink facing the harbour at Cvajner Caffè (Roman forum) before returning.

    Tips
    • · Car rental: prefer Sixt, Europcar, Avis for one-way drop-off flexibility (Zadar or Split, supplement €50-80). Avoid no-brand comparators.
    • · Motorway vignette not required in Croatia: tolls paid at each exit (card or cash, A6/A8 motorway Pula-Rijeka roughly €8-12).
    • · Amphitheatre at night: lighting on until 10-11pm in summer. Interior visit (€10, 8am-9pm) is worthwhile but the night exterior remains the iconic photo.
    • · Konoba Batelina: open Tue-Sat dinner only, closed Sun-Mon. Book by phone (English OK) +385 52 573 767.
  2. 2
    Day 2

Pula → Rovinj (45 min) + hilltop villages

Morning Pula Roman amphitheatre interior (€10, 8am-9pm in season) — tiers, arenas, basement (olive oil and antique wine exhibit). Allow 1-1.5h. Walk to the forum (ancient central square) with Temple of Augustus (1st century, free), Arch of the Sergii. Coffee at Cvajner (terrace facing the temple).

Depart for Rovinj (45 min, 35 km via coastal road 21 or fast A9 motorway). Arrive at noon. Rovinj is Istria's Venetian pearl — old town on a peninsula, cobbled lanes climbing to Saint Euphemia Basilica (60m tall, bell tower modelled on Venice's Saint Mark's, climb €5 for sea view). The town was part of the Venetian Republic until 1797, the architecture and (officially bilingual) Italian language reflect this.

Lunch Konoba Veli Jože (Istrian cuisine, fritto misto, €30-40/pers.) or fancier La Puntulina (rock terrace, €60-80/pers., book 1 week ahead). Afternoon: walk the rocks of Punta Corrente (protected forest, free access, pebble beaches, swimming) or Batana Museum (€4) on traditional boats. Mythical port sunset seen from Spagnola or the Aldo Rismondo promenade. Truffle dinner (in season) or fish, cocktail at Mediterraneo Bar (rock terrace at the foot of the basilica).

    Tips
    • · Parking in Rovinj: Valdibora car park (€1.5/h, €12/24h) or Concetta (free off-season) at 10 min walk from old town. Intra-muros banned to cars.
    • · Truffle restaurants: Konoba Mondo in Motovun and Zigante in Livade are the references. Book 24-48h ahead in high season.
    • · Rovinj sunset: view from Spagnola (northwest cape) unbeatable. Bring a bottle of Malvazija (Istrian white grape) and a blanket.
    • · Rovinj is Istria's most expensive town: restaurants 30-50% above Pula. To save, alternate with village konobas (Veli Jože in Vidolovići, Marko in Bale).
  3. 3
    Day 3

    Inland Istria: Motovun, Grožnjan, truffles

Day in inland Istria (50 km loop, 1-1.5h total driving) — the "Croatian Tuscany": green hills, malvazija and teran vineyards, truffle forests (oak, hornbeam). First stop: Motovun (277 m altitude, 500 inhabitants) — fortified medieval village perched above the Mirna valley. Park at the lower car park (€3), walk up (15 min, stairs + path) to the free ramparts. Terrace coffee at Mondo Konoba or Hotel Kaštel with view over the Motovun truffle forest (the world's largest white truffle was found there in 1999, 1.31 kg, Guinness record).

Drive to Grožnjan (15 km, artists' village, 30 open studios) — high point of the Bijela Cesta (white road), former railway converted into a gravel cycle path. Aperitif at La Parenzana (glass of malvazija €3-4).

The headline experience: truffle hunt with truffle dog (€60-100/pers., 2-3h, start around 2-3pm) — book via Karlić Tartufi (Paladini) or Zigante (Livade). The guide leads with their dog (lagotto romagnolo), explains geology/season, ends with truffle oil tasting and omelette. Dinner fuži with white truffles (Oct-Dec season, ~€45) or black (year-round, ~€30) at Zigante (Livade) or Konoba Mondo (Motovun). Night Rovinj.

    Tips
    • · White truffle (tuber magnatum pico): October-December season, exceptional, €2,000-4,000/kg wholesale. Black truffle (tuber aestivum): available year-round, €200-500/kg, more accessible.
    • · Truffle hunt: bring closed shoes, rain gear, the experience is in damp forest. The dog does the work, you observe.
    • · Truffle purchases: truffle oil (€8-15), truffle honey (€10-15), truffle paste (€15-25) — solid souvenirs. Avoid "fresh whole truffle" at airport (often frozen, lower quality).
    • · The International Truffle Festival runs in Buzet, Livade and Motovun September-November — free tasting weekends.
  4. 4
    Day 4

    Rovinj → Plitvice (4h drive)

Long drive 320 km via Rijeka and Karlovac (3.5-4h, A8 + A6 motorway, cumulative tolls €18-22). Early start recommended (7-8am) to enjoy afternoon at Plitvice. Coffee and lunch stop in Rijeka (3rd-largest city, industrial port) on the Korzo (main square) or at the central market (fresh fish and produce).

Arrive Plitvice mid-afternoon. The national park has 3 entrances: Entrance 1 (South, main, car park, ticket office) or Entrance 2 (North, upper lakes). Mukinje village and Plitvička Jezera concentrate the accommodation (10-15 hotels/guesthouses). Recommended: Hotel Jezero (official park, €100-140/night) or Plitvice Holiday Resort (wooden cabins, €80-120/night), or private apartmans on Booking (€60-100/night).

Late afternoon for first scouting: free walk around Lake Kozjak (largest of the 16 stepped lakes, free outside the paid entrance). Sunset on the Veliki Slap waterfall (78 m, Croatia's tallest) from the free viewpoint. Dinner Plitvice trout at a local guesthouse (€15-25/person, caught fresh from the lakes). Early curfew: park opens 7am tomorrow, better be at the gate by 6:45am.

    Tips
    • · Alternative route: via coastal Senj (road 8) — longer (+1h) but scenic with Kvarner islands view (Krk, Cres). Pick this if not in a rush.
    • · Fuel up in Karlovac before Plitvice: few pumps in the park, prices 5-10 cents/L higher in tourist area.
    • · Official park hotels (Jezero, Plitvice, Bellevue) include 2-day park entry in the room price — saves €35/pers. vs separate purchase. Check at booking.
    • · Mukinje has 1 Konzum supermarket (8am-9pm) and 2 restaurants. Time to stock up (water, snacks for tomorrow's hike).
  5. 5
    Day 5

    Plitvice: national park day

Plitvice National Park (UNESCO since 1979) Entrance 1 or 2 at opening (7am in summer, 8am off-season). Variable prices by season: €40 in July-August, €23.90 in May-June and September, €10 in winter. Tickets online at np-plitvicka-jezera.hr (slot to choose, mandatory in high season).

The park protects 16 stepped turquoise lakes (133m altitude difference between highest and lowest), connected by 92 waterfalls formed by tufa limestone deposits (a geological process still active). Trails exclusively in wood (to avoid damaging the tufa), sometimes at water level. Two main loops: Loop K (8h, 18 km, complete) — passes Veliki Slap, boat shuttle on Kozjak, upper lakes; Loop H (4-5h, 9 km, condensed) — best time/discovery ratio if only one day. Internal bus (free, included) and electric boat shuttle (free, 20 min on Kozjak) connect sections.

Lunch packed picnic (banned in some zones, eat on provided benches) or stop at Lički Kuhar restaurant (entrance 1). Late afternoon, drive Plitvice → Zadar (1h30, 130 km, A1 motorway toll €8-10). Settle Zadar centre (apartman €70-120/night) or Borik (beach hotel zone, €90-150/night). Dinner Konoba Stomorica or Pet Bunara (modern Dalmatian cuisine, €35-45/pers.).

    Tips
    • · Tufa photos: turquoise colour is more vibrant under cloudy skies than direct sun. Overcast days are often the most photogenic.
    • · Essential footwear: wet wooden boardwalks are slippery. Walking trainers or low hiking shoes, never flip-flops.
    • · Swimming banned in all the lakes (protected zone). To cool off: Korana river at the south park exit, free swimming allowed.
    • · Book the morning slot (7-9am) — cruise bus influx arrives at 10am. Before 9am, boardwalks are often empty.
  6. 6
    Day 6

Zadar: Sea Organ + Sun Salutation

Morning Zadar old town (800m peninsula, ringed by Venetian walls, 5 monumental gates). Must-sees: Saint Donatus Church (9th century, Byzantine stone rotunda, €3.50, exceptional acoustics used for concerts), Roman Forum (free, 1st-century ruins at the foot of Saint Donatus), Saint Anastasia Cathedral with its bell tower (€3, panoramic view over peninsula and Pag in the distance). Stroll along Kalelarga (main pedestrian street) and coffee at Coffee & Cake or Lungomare.

Lunch Pet Bunara (modern Mediterranean, €25-35/pers.) or Konoba Stomorica (fish, €30-40/pers.).

Afternoon on the Riva (seafront promenade) for the two contemporary artworks by architect Nikola Bašić: the Sea Organ (Morske orgulje, 2005) — marble staircase carved with 35 vertical pipes that waves make sound in melancholy chords, free, the sound is constantly different. Right next to it, the Greeting to the Sun (Pozdrav Suncu, 2008) — 22m-diameter circle of 300 multicoloured solar panels that recharge by day and light up in a hypnotic sunset show. Zadar sunset, called "the most beautiful in the world" by Alfred Hitchcock in 1964, sets the Kornati horizon ablaze. Aperitif Maraschino cocktail (cherry liqueur, Zadar's signature) at Garden Lounge (museum rooftop). Return car at Zadar agency (Sixt, Europcar, downtown accessible).

    Tips
    • · Bus Zadar-Split 2h30, €15-20 (Arriva, FlixBus). Book via getbybus.com or at the bus station directly. Trains exist but are 2x longer.
    • · Maraschino: Maraska is Zadar's historic producer. Bottle to bring home (€8-15) in duty-free or Konzum supermarket.
    • · Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun: free 24/7. Arrive 1h before sunset for golden light + panel light show.
    • · If you keep the car until Split: one-way drop-off costs €50-80 extra but avoids the bus with luggage.
  7. 7
    Day 7

    Zadar → Split (bus 2h30) + Trogir

Morning bus Zadar → Split (2h30, €15-20, FlixBus or Arriva) — scenic A1 motorway, view of the Kornati on the right. Arrive at Split bus station (5 min walk to the palace). Drop bags at inner-palace apartman (booking essential, €90-160/night in May-June).

Lunch Bokeria (Fruit Square, €25-35/pers., modern cuisine in a refurbished hall) or Brasserie on 7 (Riva view, €30-40/pers.). Then bus n°37 or Promet Split → Trogir (25 min, €4, departs Sukoišanska).

Trogir is a medieval islet between coast and Čiovo, UNESCO since 1997, fortified 13th century, human-scale (complete visit 2-3h). Saint Lawrence Cathedral (€5) with Radovan portal (1240), Croatia's Romanesque masterpiece (Adam and Eve statues, Genesis scenes). Climb the bell tower (€5, successive narrow floors) for 360° view over the marina and Čiovo island. Walk Trogir Riva (yachts), Kamerlengo fortress (€5, Venetian legacy).

Return to Split by bus late afternoon. Evening on Riva: sunset walk, aperitif at Charlie's Bar or Bobis (historic terrace). Dinner at an inner-palace konoba: Konoba Marjan (fish, €35-50/pers.) or Villa Spiza (lamb leg, peka, €30-45/pers., no reservation, queue).

    Tips

    • · Inner-palace apartman in Split: Booking, AirBnB. Prefer those with lift or ground floor (palace stone stairs hard with luggage).
    • · Trogir: alternative to bus = water taxi from Split marina (€15, 1h) — more scenic, Adriatic coast view on arrival.
    • · Konoba Marjan, Villa Spiza, Konoba Hvaranin: 3 authentic inner-palace references. Book 2-3 days ahead in July-August or wait 1h.
  8. 8
    Day 8

    Split: Diocletian's Palace

Full day in Split. Morning Diocletian's Palace (305 AD, UNESCO since 1979) — Emperor Diocletian's retirement residence, became the heart of the medieval then modern city (3,000 people still live in its walls). Enter via the Golden Gate (Zlatna Vrata, Grgur Ninski statue at the gate — rub his left foot for luck). Descend into the basement (substructures, €7, 9am-8pm in season) — intact vault labyrinth used as Game of Thrones backdrop (seasons 4-5: Meereen Queen's Palace). The peristyle (central columned square), the palace's focal point, hosts summer concerts.

Climb the Saint Domnius bell tower (€3, open 8am-8pm) — Diocletian's former mausoleum turned church, narrow stairs not recommended for claustrophobics but exceptional panorama over the bay and islands.

Lunch Konoba Hvaranin (inner-palace, €25-35/pers., Hvar specialities) or picnic on Marjan (pine peninsula above the city). Afternoon Marjan hill (178m pinewood, 1h trail, free) with views over Hvar and Brač, Saint Nicholas and Saint Hieronymus chapels, hidden beaches (Bene, Kašjuni). Heat alternative: Bačvice beach (rare Dalmatian sand) for swimming.

Evening peka ordered 24h ahead — absolute Dalmatian speciality: octopus or lamb cooked under a cast-iron bell for 2-3h, charcoal above and below, melt-in-mouth meat. Restaurants: Konoba Fife (Matejuška, €30-45/pers.) or Trattoria Tinel (inner-palace). Evening drink Charlie's or Academia Ghetto Club (2000-year-old murals, atmosphere).

    Tips
    • · Guided palace tour: Free Walking Tour 10am or 12pm (2h, tip €10-15), meeting at Grgur Ninski statue. Excellent historical context.
    • · Diocletian's Wine House (inner-palace): tasting of 3-5 Dalmatian wines €15-25/pers., perfect pre-dinner.
    • · Marjan: marked trail from Saint Anne Church (Veli Varoš). Bring water (no fountain), start early morning or late afternoon (heat).
    • · Peka: Konoba Fife (Matejuška, €30/pers.), Trattoria Tinel, Apetit Split. Order 24h-48h ahead by phone or via the apartman.

    Day 9

Split → Hvar (ferry 1h) + Stari Grad or Pakleni

Morning Jadrolinija or Krilo passenger catamaran, Split → Hvar Town, 1h, €6-30. Booking essential (jadrolinija.hr or krilo.hr) in July-August. Departures around 7-9am depending on operator, 4-6 daily crossings in summer.

Arrive Hvar Town around 10-11am. Drop bags Hvar Town apartman (€90-180/night, port view extra) — quieter alternatives: Križna luka (10 min walk, sea view, €70-120/night) or Pod Stine (15 min walk, hotel with pool, €130-200/night).

    Two options for the day:

Option A — Stari Grad UNESCO: bus Hvar Town → Stari Grad (25 min, €6) or scooter rental (€20-30/day). Stari Grad Plain UNESCO (Ager, listed 2008): 4th-century BC Greek land division, still cultivated. Hamlets Velo Grablje, Brusje, Dol for lavender fields (mid-June to mid-July). Tvrdalj Palace, lunch Konoba Mate or Konoba Kokot.

Option B — Pakleni Islands: taxi-boat from the quay (€50-100/group, negotiate), swim stops at Palmižana or Jerolim (pebble beaches, turquoise water). Lunch beach restaurant Toto's or Laganini Beach Club (€35-50/pers.).

Back to Hvar Town around 5-6pm. Sunset at Spanish Fortress (Fortica, €10, open until 9pm) — 30 min climb behind the cathedral. Dinner Konoba Menego (traditional cuisine, €35-50/pers.) then nightlife drink (Hula Hula Bar, Carpe Diem).

    Tips
    • · Stari Grad or Pakleni: pick based on weather and season. Lavender mid-June = Stari Grad priority. Full summer sun = Pakleni for swimming.
    • · Hvar scooter: €20-30/day at Navigare or Pelegrini. B licence sufficient up to 50cc. Helmet mandatory and provided.
    • · Hvar Town is expensive and noisy with nightlife (until 4am): for quiet sleep, book Križna luka or Pod Stine.
    • · Spanish Fortress: €10 entry, but near-equivalent view from the Tvrdava Sveti Nikola terrace (free, halfway up).
  10. 10
    Day 10

Hvar → Split → Paris return

Last morning on Hvar before return. Morning catamaran Hvar → Split, 1h, €6-30 — first departure 6am or 7:30am depending on operator. Check schedules on jadrolinija.hr or krilo.hr 48h ahead.

If the Split-Paris flight is mid-afternoon (low-cost standard slot), back to Split around 8-9am. Drop bags at the ferry terminal left-luggage (€5-8/day/bag) or at the previous apartman (often free until noon). Last walk on Riva or green market (Pazar) and fish market (Ribarnica) for fresh souvenirs: Brač olive oil (€15-25 for 0.5L), pošip wine (€12-20/bottle), island honey, Bajadera confectionery (€15/500g box).

Airport transfer: Pleso bus (€6, 30 min) from the station or taxi/Bolt (€35-45). SPU airport is compact (1 terminal, limited duty-free) — arrive 2h before Schengen flight, 2h30 before non-Schengen flights. Flight Split-Paris (2h10, Croatia Airlines, Transavia or easyJet, €100-280).

Final tip: Croatian cosmetics as original souvenirs to buy at SPU duty-free — Hvar lavender products (soap €4-8, essential oil €12-20), fig honey, artisan floral waters.

    Tips
    • · First ferry Hvar-Split: 6am Jadrolinija (cheap €6-12) or 7:30am Krilo (comfort €20-30). Check 48h ahead via jadrolinija.hr.
    • · SPU airport: limited duty-free, prices similar to town. Better to buy souvenirs at Pazar market or Konzum.
    • · If flight cancelled/delayed: Croatia Airlines has few frequencies, plan an extra night. easyJet and Transavia more frequent in high season.
    • · Floral waters (lavender, rosemary, rose): original souvenirs €8-15, buy at Pazar (artisan stalls) or local pharmacy.

Frequently asked questions

Si vols Pula non disponibles (basse saison), commencez à Zagreb (vol direct Paris-Zagreb quotidien) puis route Istrie via Rijeka.
Quel budget ?+
Compter __1 800-2 400 €/personne__ : hôtels 3-4* ou apartmans 80-150 €/nuit (9 nuits = 800-1 350 €), location voiture 4 jours (200-300 €), essence + péages (80-120 €), restitution Zadar (parfois supplément 50-80 €), ferries (60-100 €), bus Zadar-Split (15-25 €), repas (350-500 €), vols A/R (300-450 €). Budget routard : 1 200 €. Luxe : 4 000+ €.
Voiture obligatoire ?+
Pour l'__Istrie et Plitvice__, oui — transports en commun limités, distances entre villages perchés. Pour la __Dalmatie côtière__ (Zadar, Split, Hvar), bus + ferries suffisent. Solution optimale : voiture jours 1-6 (Istrie + Plitvice + Zadar), restitution Zadar, puis bus + ferries pour Split et Hvar.
Lavande Hvar fin juin. Truffe blanche Istrie oct-déc. Évitez juillet-août : Plitvice 40 € au lieu de 23,90 €, parc bondé, Split et Hvar saturés.

Our verdict

This 10-day itinerary is the perfect balance for discovering Croatia in its diversity: Italianate Istria (Pula, Rovinj, truffles), Plitvice exceptional nature, Central Dalmatia (Zadar, Split, Hvar) with its 5 UNESCO sites. Hybrid car (Istria + Plitvice) + ferries/bus (coastal Dalmatia) formula is optimal. Visit in May-June or September for best conditions. Significant budget (€1,800-2,400/person) but rich and varied experience — Croatia at its peak in less than 2 weeks.
