Quebec City

Things to do — Quebec City

Quebec City explores on foot — Old Quebec is compact, no useful car downtown. Typical 3-day itinerary:

Day 1 — Upper town and Château Frontenac: Château Frontenac (morning, historic guided tour 50 min, CAD 27), Dufferin Terrace (wooden promenade facing the river, summer kiosks), Battlefields Park and Plains of Abraham (afternoon, 98-ha historic park, site of the decisive 1759 battle between Wolfe and Montcalm — free visit, museum CAD 16, Bixi cycling possible), Citadelle de Québec (1820-1850 star-shaped fortress, daily changing of the guard 10am in summer, 60 min guided tour CAD 16). Dinner Aux Anciens Canadiens (34 Saint-Louis Street, traditional Quebec cuisine in a 1675 house, tourtière CAD 28, pâté chinois, ragoût de pattes de cochon, sugar pie washed down with Caribou).

Day 2 — Lower town and Petit Champlain: descent by Old Quebec funicular (morning, CAD 4, open 7:30am-11:30pm) or by Breakneck Stairs. Place Royale (first permanent French settlement in North America 1608, Louis XIV statue in the centre, Notre-Dame-des-Victoires church from 1688). Petit Champlain Quarter (North America's oldest commercial street 1685, artisan shops, cafés). Museum of Civilisation (afternoon, CAD 22, one of Canada's best history and Indigenous cultures museums). Fresque des Québécois (1999, monumental 420 m² trompe-l'œil) and Petit Champlain Fresco. Evening: Quebec-Lévis ferry (12 min, CAD 10-15 return, spectacular view of Old Quebec from the south shore, especially at sunset), return for dinner at Le Saint-Amour (Michelin-starred gastronomic, CAD 95-180/person, tasting menu) or Chez Boulay (boreal-Quebec cuisine, CAD 65-110).

Day 3 — Excursion: Montmorency Falls (15 min away, 83 m high, 30% higher than Niagara, accessible by cable car CAD 17, suspension bridge above the falls, 487-step staircase), Île d'Orléans (20 min away, scenic 67 km route around the island, orchards, vineyards Cassis Monna et Filles, sugar shacks, gastronomic restaurants Auberge La Goeliche, charming preserved island), Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré Basilica (35 min away, major pilgrimage site since 1658, neo-Romanesque 1923, 1.5 million pilgrims/year), Mont-Sainte-Anne (30 min away, skiing in winter, downhill biking and hiking in summer, panoramic view of the St Lawrence). Winter excursion: Ice Hotel at Valcartier (20 min away, the only one in North America, visit CAD 30, night CAD 500-1,000, open early January to late March), Village Vacances Valcartier (indoor water park + winter park with tube slides).

Longer excursions: Charlevoix-Tadoussac (3-4 nights, 1h30-3h away, whales at Tadoussac mid-May to late October, Saguenay Fjord, Baie-Saint-Paul capital of Quebec art — must-do combination), Gaspé Peninsula (3-5 nights, 5h drive, Forillon National Park, iconic Percé Rock, Bonaventure Island and gannets), Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean (3h away, fjord, national park, belugas).
