Three highlights structure the visit of Angkor Wat.
Sunrise: the iconic experience. Arrival 4:45-5am at the north pond, sunrise between 5:30am (summer) and 6:15am (winter). Reflections of the five towers in the water, sky shifting from black to orange-pink then blue — one of Asia's most famous images. Bring headlamp, water, light snack, camera with stabiliser. Recommended position: north pond. In high season, 1,500-2,000 people will be present — for front-row, arrive at 4:30am.
Interior bas-relief visit: the cultural and iconographic heart of Angkor Wat. 800-metre-long peripheral gallery, carved with the world's longest bas-reliefs (1,200 m² of sculpture). Visiting direction: anticlockwise (starting from the west gallery, reversed time direction in Hindu mythology). Main scenes: west gallery (Battle of Lanka, Ramayana; Battle of Kurukshetra, Mahabharata), south gallery (royal procession of Suryavarman II, Yama's judgment and 32 hells), east gallery (churning of the sea of milk — the founding cosmogonic scene where gods and demons rotate Mount Mandara on the snake Vasuki to extract the nectar of immortality, one of humanity's most beautiful sculpted compositions), north gallery (Vishnu's victory over demons). Plan 2-3h with a guide.
Central sanctuary: ascent to the upper level of the pyramid (under strict conditions — see FAQ). Panoramic view of the entire complex and surrounding jungle. Four Buddha statues at the four cardinal points (heritage of the 16th-century Theravada Buddhist conversion). Sacred atmosphere — respectful silence required, no-flash photos allowed. Plan 30-45 min on site.
Complementary activities on site: Phnom Bakheng ascent (neighbouring hill, panoramic view of Angkor Wat at sunset — limited to 300 simultaneous visitors, queue from 4pm, alternative: Pre Rup for sunset), cruise at the foot of the moats (luxury option, USD 30-50 per person, Apsara Boat operators), dinner-concert with traditional Khmer classical music at Phnom Bakheng (offered by some tour operators).
Related excursions: Bayon (1 km away, in Angkor Thom — 216 enigmatic stone faces), Ta Prohm (overgrown by roots, immortalised by Tomb Raider), Banteay Srei (32 km north, finely carved), all accessible with the same Angkor pass.
