The Brazilian Northeast enjoys stable tropical climate year-round — dry season September to March, rainy season April to July. Temperatures stay high permanently (24-31 °C, hotter on coast, cooler at altitude in Chapada Diamantina).
The optimal period is September to March (tropical dry season): ideal climate, warm sea (27-29 °C), clear sky, perfect conditions for beaches, Salvador and Chapada. It's also Brazilian and international high tourist season.
Months to favour: October-November (before austral summer and Brazilian tourist peak), September (out of rainy season, quiet window), March (post-Carnival, return to calm). December-February corresponds to tourist and festive peak: New Year, Iemanjá (February 2), Carnival (4 days late February-early March) — exceptional atmosphere but maximum rates (hotels x3 to x4 during Salvador Carnival, book 6-12 months ahead).
Avoid the rainy season (April to July), particularly May-June which are the wettest months (250-300 mm/month, often grey sky, less attractive beaches). Chapada Diamantina can be inaccessible some days (dangerous waterfalls, muddy trails, impassable rivers). August is an interesting window: declining rains, reduced crowds, attractive rates.
For Lençóis Maranhenses (national park of dunes and lagoons), specific period: May to September only (lagoons filled after January-April rains), ideal July-August for full-water lagoons.
