Pantanal

When to go — Pantanal

The Pantanal lives by the rhythm of its annual floods — a cycle of flooding and drying that radically transforms the landscape and tourist experience through the seasons. Understanding this cycle is essential to plan your trip.

The dry season (July to October) is the only recommended period for classic tourist Pantanal. Waters gradually recede (high waters peak in March-April, retreat in May-June, maximum dryness in September-October), wildlife concentrates around remaining water holes (permanent rivers, residual lagoons, watering puddles), roads become passable again (open Transpantaneira), lodges are open, wildlife observation is optimal. July-August: Brazilian tourist peak (national school holidays), rising rates, moderate crowds. September: jaguar observation peak (maximum concentration around Rio Cuiabá), slightly thinner crowds, optimal window. October: end of dry season, still excellent, declining crowds, first sporadic rains end of month.

Dry-season temperatures are contrasted: 32-36 °C in full midday (dry heat, bearable), 10-15 °C at night in June-July (austral winter, plan fleece and beanie for morning pick-up safaris — 6am-9am, chilly), 18-22 °C at night in September-October.

The wet season (December to April) is to avoid for a classic tourist stay. Rains raise rivers and 80% of the Pantanal becomes an immense marsh — extraordinary landscape seen from above but impossible to traverse: the Transpantaneira is impassable (submerged bridges, cut sections), most lodges close (mainly March-April), wildlife disperses over vast inaccessible areas. Only a few specialised operators offer special "high waters" cruises with adapted boat-hotels (Pantanal Wildlife Center) — unique photographic experience but no systematic jaguar observation.

Shoulder seasons (May-June and November) are acceptable: 20-30% lower rates, reduced crowds, wildlife still visible but less concentrated than peak dry. Favour if budget tight or seeking less formulaic experience.
