Pantanal

Things to do — Pantanal

Activities in the Pantanal all organise from eco-lodges and fazendas, offering structured programmes around 2-3 daily guided excursions with local naturalists (sometimes French-speaking, often English-speaking).

The pick-up safari (game drive) on the Transpantaneira is the North Pantanal signature activity. At dawn (5:30am-9am, ideal golden light) and sunset (4pm-7pm, last light), an adapted pick-up (raised back seats) traverses the track over 30-50 km with frequent stops to observe wildlife. Guaranteed observation: yacare caimans (by hundreds in puddles), capybaras (in troops of 10-30 individuals), marsh deer, anteaters, coatis, agoutis, and the full ornithological lineup (jabirus, hocco-pheasants, parrots, savacus, hyacinth macaws). Possible but less systematic observation: jaguars (variable chance by season and zone — best rates at Porto Jofre), ocelots, pumas, tapirs, anacondas, giant anteaters (South Pantanal).

The boat safari on rivers is the flagship experience for jaguar observation. In North Pantanal, the Porto Jofre region (Rio Cuiabá) is world-famous — a flat-bottom boat with naturalist guide spends 5-8h/day exploring the wooded banks of Rio Cuiabá and its tributaries (Rio Três Irmãos, Rio Piquiri) where jaguars live. The concentration is such that operators guarantee 1-5 different jaguar sightings per day in dry season (July-October) — a jaguar drinking at the water's edge, walking on the bank, hunting a caiman or capybara, even swimming across the river. Cost: €50-100 extra/jaguar boat safari day (often included in specialised lodge rates like Jaguar Ecological Reserve).

The horse safari is particularly developed in South Pantanal (fazendas). Pantanal horses (rustic local breed) are perfectly adapted to crossing marshes and allow close observation of wildlife without disturbing animals (caimans and capybaras don't flee a rider). 2-4h outings, beginner level accepted.

Guided walking hikes allow close observation of birds and smaller mammals. Morning outings 6am-9am in dry season (before heat), with bird call identification, jaguar tracks in mud, medicinal plants.

Specific activities: piranha fishing (Pantanal rivers, lunch tasting), sport fishing (dorado, pacu, pintado — regulated practice), starry night (Pantanal = sky without light pollution, austral constellation observation Southern Cross, Centaur, hyper-visible Milky Way), night pick-up safari (animal eye observation by torch: caimans, ocelots, rare jaguars, owls), pool and lounging in lodges (most have natural or designed pools).

From South Pantanal, possibility of 2-3 day extension to Bonito (200 km north-west of Campo Grande, 4h drive): crystal-clear river waters (Rio Sucuri, Rio da Prata, Rio Formoso) allowing flutuação snorkelling with mask and snorkel among multicoloured fish (€30-50 per outing), luminous caves (Gruta do Lago Azul, turquoise blue underground lake), waterfalls (Boca da Onça, Estância Mimosa). Bonito is one of the world's most unique aquatic ecotourism destinations.
