The Pantanal is one of the world's great wildlife observation destinations — an extraordinary ecosystem straddling Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay, UNESCO-listed in 2000, covering 210,000 km² (three-quarters of Italy). It's the planet's largest wetland and, for 20 years, the world capital of wild jaguar observation — a wildlife experience whose density and accessibility surpass those of the African Serengeti or Costa Rican parks.
The region is touristically organised around two distinct gateways. North Pantanal (Mato Grosso), accessible from Cuiabá (domestic flight Rio 2h30 or São Paulo 2h, €150-300 return), is the most visited sector — famous Transpantaneira road (147 km of dirt track, 122 wooden bridges crossing the sanctuary), renowned lodges (Pousada Rio Mutum, Pouso Alegre, Araras Eco Lodge), Porto Jofre region (world's eldorado for jaguar observers on Rio Cuiabá). South Pantanal (Mato Grosso do Sul), accessible from Campo Grande (Rio flight 2h30 or São Paulo 1h45), is more authentic and less frequented — traditional fazendas (Caiman, Fazenda San Francisco), focus on global ecotourism, access to Bonito (crystal-clear rivers).
The tourist experience is clear: spend 3-5 nights in a lodge or fazenda (€200-500/night/person full board) with daily activity programme (2-3 excursions/day): pick-up safari on Transpantaneira (dawn and sunset, big fauna and bird observation), boat safari on rivers (Rio Cuiabá for jaguars, Rio Aquidauana for giant otters), horse safari (observation without disturbing), walking hike (birds and small mammals), starry night (Pantanal = sky without light pollution, austral constellations).
Our advice: integrate the Pantanal into a complete Brazilian trip (15 days minimum). Ideal combination: Pantanal (4 nights) + Iguazu (2 nights) — Iguazu is 1h30 flight from Cuiabá, allowing a complete mini nature trip over 6-7 days. Or more ambitious combination: Rio (4 nights) + Pantanal (4 nights) + Iguazu (2 nights) over 12-15 days. The Pantanal isn't a stop: it's a destination in its own right demanding time.
