Culture — Brazil

Brazilian culture is among the world's most vibrant, mixed and exported — a unique blend of Portuguese roots (colonisation 1500-1822), African (4-5 million slaves deported 16th-19th centuries), Amerindian (Amazonian indigenous peoples, Tupi-Guarani, Yanomami) and more recently European (Italian, German, Japanese immigration in the South).

Music is Brazil's soul. Samba, born in Rio's favelas in the 20th century, is the quintessential national music — syncopated 2/4 rhythm, percussion instruments (surdo, tamborim, cuíca, agogô), iconic schools (Mangueira, Portela, Beija-Flor). Bossa nova, born on Ipanema beaches in the 1950s (João Gilberto, Tom Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes — The Girl from Ipanema is the world's second most recorded standard after the Beatles' Yesterday), embodies elegant nostalgic Brazil. Forró (Northeast), frevo and maracatu (Pernambuco), axé (Bahia, Daniela Mercury), carioca funk and sertanejo (Brazilian country) complete a music scene of exceptional vitality.

The Brazilian Carnival (4 days late February-early March, dates vary with Easter) is the planet's largest popular festival. In Rio, samba school parades at the Sambódromo (created by Oscar Niemeyer in 1984) pit 12 main schools across two magic nights (Sunday and Monday gras, up to 80,000 paying spectators per evening). Street blocos (300+ free spontaneous groups, millions in the streets between Centro, Lapa, Santa Teresa, Ipanema) extend the party continuously. In Salvador, Carnival is different — no Sambódromo but trios elétricos (truck-stages) crisscrossing the city for 6 days, with Daniela Mercury, Ivete Sangalo, Margareth Menezes. In Olinda and Recife, Carnival is more traditional and family-friendly, with giant bonecos (paper-mache puppets) and frevo.

Capoeira, UNESCO intangible heritage 2014, is a dance martial art born in Northeast slave quarters in the 17th century. Fluid movements, leg play (ginga), music with berimbau (string bow), pandeiro and singing in old Portuguese — capoeira practised in roda (circle), to see in Salvador (Pelourinho, Forte da Capoeira). Initiation classes €15-30/h.

Candomblé and umbanda are Afro-Brazilian religions inherited from Yoruba (Nigeria) and Bantu (Angola) traditions. Candomblé honours orixás (deities) — Iemanjá (sea), Oxalá (creation), Iansã (wind), Oxóssi (forests) — in ceremonies (terreiros) in Salvador, Cachoeira, Recife. Officially recognised religion since 1988, practised by 0.3-2% of population (underestimated, many Brazilians combine Catholicism and Afro practices). Syncretic religious festivals — Iemanjá February 2 in Salvador, Senhor do Bonfim in January — draw hundreds of thousands of faithful.

Football is the absolute national passion — Brazil = 5 World Cups (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002), world record, legends (Pelé, Garrincha, Zico, Ronaldo, Romário, Ronaldinho, Neymar). Maracanã stadium in Rio (78,000 seats, mythical), Morumbi in São Paulo. Brazilian championship match €8-30/seat — authentic cultural experience.

Beaches are a central social space, especially in Rio. Beach volleyball (vôlei de praia, invented in Brazil), futevôlei (football-volleyball), capoeira on sand, coconut juice, canned Skol or Brahma beer — Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon beaches stage daily carioca life. Respecting sunset at Arpoador (rocky tip between Ipanema and Copacabana) is a ritual — collective applause at sunset, unique atmosphere.
