Essential activities in Hobart.
MONA — Museum of Old and New Art (signature experience): contemporary art museum opened in 2011 by David Walsh, one of the world's most audacious. Built underground in a cliff by the Derwent River. Permanent collection (ancient art + provocative contemporary art), temporary exhibitions. Legendary works: Cloaca Professional (excrement machine), Sidney Nolan's Snake (1,620-panel painting), Bit Fall. Accessible by ferry from Brooke Street Pier (AUD 35 return, 30 min crossing on Derwent — experience in itself with MR1 boat or premium Posh Pit option). AUD 30 entry (free for Tasmanians). Visit with personal O tablet (no labels). The Source restaurant (lunch-dinner AUD 80-140), Faro Tapas Bar (AUD 30-60), Glass House café. Plan 4-5h on site minimum.
Salamanca Market (every Saturday 8:30am-3pm): one of Australia's most beautiful markets since 1972, on Salamanca Place. 300+ Tasmanian craft stalls (ceramics, huon pine wood, photography, jewellery), local products (Pyengana and Bruny Island cheeses, unique leatherwood honey, Lark whisky miniatures, Tasmanian cider, orchard fruits), street food and on-site dining, vibrant atmosphere with street musicians. Free. Arrive early (9-10am) to avoid crowds. Imperatively plan stay to include a Saturday.
Battery Point (historic free quarter): 1830-1850 Georgian cottages, one of Australia's best preserved quarters, National Trust listed. 1-2h walk from Salamanca Place, cobblestone streets, small light-stone houses, Constitution Dock marina. Arthur Circus (round square of 11 cottages, true architectural masterpiece).
Mount Wellington (1,271 m, 30 min drive): breathtaking panoramic view over Hobart, Derwent River, Tasman Peninsula. Car access (Pinnacle Road, free, well-maintained paved road) or Mt Wellington Explorer shuttle bus (AUD 30-40 return). At summit: glass shelter, observation trail. Temperatures -5 to -10 °C colder than Hobart in winter, cool in summer — plan fleece and windbreaker. Often in clouds — check weather and webcam before ascending (wellington-park.org.au).

Cascade Brewery (1824, Australia's oldest brewery): tour-tasting AUD 30/person, 1h30, museum room and final tasting. Cascade Premium Lager and Cascade Stout.
