Whitsundays

Things to do — Whitsundays

Essential activities in the Whitsundays.

Whitehaven Beach (the essential): 7 km of 98% pure silica sand, accessible only by boat. Day excursion from Hamilton Island or Airlie Beach: AUD 200-300/person (Cruise Whitsundays, Ocean Rafting — the fast and younger, morning departure-late afternoon return, including beach free time, fringing reef snorkelling, lunch). 2-3 day cruise: AUD 400-800/person (shared cabin) — recommended to enjoy sunrise and sunset on the beach without day excursion crowds.

Hill Inlet Lookout: 20 min uphill walk from Tongue Point Beach (Whitehaven north end), boat or cruise excursion access. Iconic panoramic view over white sand swirl and turquoise water — one of Australia's most emblematic photos. Ideally visible at low-medium tide for maximum contrasts.

2-3 day catamaran sailing cruise: the Whitsundays signature experience. Prices AUD 400-800/person all-inclusive (shared cabin, meals, snorkelling, Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet, Hook Island stops). Operators: Sailing Whitsundays, Cruise Whitsundays, Atlantic Clipper (105-foot historic sailing ship), Camira (red ex-racer catamaran), Whitsunday Bullet (young fast catamaran). Private cruise: AUD 3,000-8,000/day for the boat (6-12 people).

Bareboat (sailboat rental without skipper): AUD 400-800/day for 6-8 people, international boat licence required (alternative: local skipper to embark AUD 250-350/day). Total freedom, autonomous navigation between islands.

Outer Reef excursion (Hardy Reef, GreatBarrierReef.com Reefworld pontoon): AUD 230-300/person for the day, from Hamilton Island or Airlie Beach, including 2 snorkelling/diving sites, fixed pontoon at sea for meals and activities (semi-submarine, underwater observatory observation). Practical option for those not doing sailing cruise.

Heart Reef panoramic seaplane or helicopter flight: AUD 200-400/person for 30-60 min, from Hamilton Island or Airlie Beach. Heart Reef is a naturally heart-shaped coral formation on Hardy Reef, visible only from air. The photographic investment of a lifetime. Operators: GBR Helicopters, Air Whitsunday (seaplane).

Bottle diving at Hardy Reef, Bait Reef, Hook Reef, Manta Ray Bay sites: AUD 200-300/person for 2 dives with lunch. Giant manta rays, grey reef sharks, giant groupers, sea turtles, 1,500 fish species. Discovery dive (3-4 m under supervision, no certification): AUD 200-250. 2-7 day liveaboard: AUD 1,000-3,000/person.

Humpback whale watching (July-September): AUD 200-300/person excursion, migration to tropical waters for breeding.

Hamilton Island (on-island activities): beaches (main Catseye Beach, beach snorkelling), main pool Reef View Hotel, hiking trails (One Tree Hill at sunset for iconic panorama), golf (Hamilton Island Golf Club on Dent Island, accessible by boat), horseback riding on the beach, kayak, paddle, minigolf, karting. Whitehaven Beach by helicopter (30 min flight + 30 min on beach, AUD 400-600/person) is the premium option to access Whitehaven without boat.

Airlie Beach (continental activities): urban lagoon beach (free saltwater pool alternative to sea prohibited due to jellyfish and crocodiles), walking in Conway National Park (hikes and lookouts with island views), Port of Airlie marina (sailing cruise departure), nightlife Airlie Beach Pub and The Lounge Bar (international backpacker atmosphere).
