The East Coast travels without renting a car thanks to the Acela train — probably the only American road trip done better by train than by car.
Acela (Amtrak high-speed): NYC Penn Station ↔ Washington Union Station 3h ($100-200), NYC ↔ Boston South Station 3h45 ($100-250), Washington ↔ Boston 7h. Northeast Regional service (classic Amtrak) 30% cheaper but 30% slower (NYC-DC 3h30, NYC-Boston 4h30) — $60-150. Book 2-4 weeks ahead on amtrak.com for best prices. Acela First Class offers leather seats, included meals, fast wifi.
Domestic flights between cities: possible but rarely cost-effective vs Acela. NYC-Washington flight 1h15 + 2x1h30 transfers = 4h door-to-door vs 3h train. NYC-Boston flight 1h30 + 2x1h30 = 4h30 vs 3h45 train. Flight fares $100-300 by lead time. Prefer Acela for NYC-DC and NYC-Boston, flight for Boston-DC (long by train).
In New York, public transport is excellent — 24/7 subway, 472 stations, 36 lines, $3 per ride, 7-day MetroCard unlimited $33 (best deal). Complementary buses.
