Ella

Things to do — Ella

Three headline activities structure a visit to Ella. All can be done in 2 to 3 full days.

The Little Adam's Peak hike is the first to do, ideally on arrival day to acclimatise. Depart from the village (15-min walk to the starting sign), progressive climb on a well-marked path through tea plantations (45 min), then final ascent by stone stairs to the 1,141 m summit. At the top, 360-degree panoramic view over Ella Gap, Ella Rock opposite and surrounding plantations. Full 2-hour loop round trip, accessible to all levels. Sunset from Little Adam's Peak is one of the highlights of an Ella stay — leave around 4:30 pm to reach the summit by 5:30 pm.

The Ella Rock hike is more demanding but also more rewarding. Mandatory dawn start (6 am) to avoid heat and afternoon fogs. The trail is poorly marked — it starts on the railway tracks (follow for 2 km, watch for trains!), then branches into the jungle and climbs a steep path to the 1,040 m summit. Allow 2h30 of climbing, 30 min at the summit for the panoramic view, and 1h30 of descent. Ideally, take a local guide from the village (1,500-2,500 LKR / £4-7) to avoid getting lost in the jungle.

The Nine Arches Bridge is Ella's must-see visual. This 1921 colonial stone-cut viaduct, 91 m long and 24 m high, is nestled in the jungle 3 km from the village (30-min walk or 5-min tuk-tuk ride). The magic moment is the train crossing: four times a day, a blue locomotive pulls its carriages across the nine stone arches, in a green jungle setting. Times are relatively regular: 6am, 9:30am, 11am, 3pm, 5:30pm (Ella → Demodara direction). Arrive 30 min in advance for a good spot on the viewing platform above the bridge. The 9:30am train crossing is the most photographed (soft frontal light). Warning: at crossing times, several hundred tourists can be on the trails around the bridge — the experience is less poetic than you'd imagine.

As complement, several short excursions from Ella. Ravana Falls (10 km east): 25-metre-high waterfall, accessible on foot from the road. Photogenic but often busy. Ravana Cave (right beside): cave linked to the Ramayana legend, interesting for Hindu mythology lovers. Lipton's Seat (60 km southeast, 2 hours by road): viewpoint at 1,970 m altitude where Sir Thomas Lipton came to oversee his tea plantations — accessible by private driver (£40-60/day return).
