Itineraries — Catalonia

Catalonia rewards different speeds depending on how long you stay and what draws you in — and all itineraries gravitate around two complementary poles: Barcelona and its cultural radiance, and the rest of the region, which travellers in a hurry almost always underestimate.

For a short trip (3-4 days), Barcelona alone is enough. Two days for Modernista architecture — Sagrada Família, Park Güell, Casa Batlló, La Pedrera — a morning at La Boqueria market and in the Barri Gòtic, an evening in the Born or the Eixample. On the fourth day, head out to Montserrat for the Benedictine monastery and the panoramic views over the Catalan plains.

Over a week (7 days), the classic itinerary extends beyond Barcelona (2 days) to the Costa Brava: an overnight stay in Girona for its medieval streets and Jewish quarter, then two days exploring the coves — Begur, Tamariu, Llafranc or Pals depending on the season. Finish with a day in Figueres and the Dalí Museum, returning to Barcelona by AVE. This circuit gives a balanced view of urban and coastal Catalonia.

With 10 to 15 days, the trip gains a new dimension. Tarragona and its Roman amphitheatre deserve an overnight stop. The Penedès and its cava cellars (Codorníu, Freixenet) can be visited in a half-day from Barcelona. The Catalan Pyrenees — the Val d'Aran, the Aigüestortes national park — offer a full week of alpine hiking in one of Europe's most unspoilt mountain ranges. And Cadaqués, at the end of the clifftop road, remains the secret destination beloved by Catalans themselves for its whitewashed light that captivated both Picasso and Dalí.
