Castile and Madrid

When to go — Castile and Madrid

Castile and Madrid have a strongly continental climate: blazing summers, cold dry winters, and brief but beautiful springs and autumns. Those transitions are the two ideal windows for visiting the region.

April and May are the preferred months for Madrid and the Castilian cities. Temperatures (16-24 °C) are perfect for walking Toledo's streets, following the length of Segovia's aqueduct or drifting through the Retiro park. Vegetation is recovering, terraces are open, and Madrid moves at a joyful pace. Easter week (Semana Santa) brings impressive processions throughout Castile but also heavy crowds — book well in advance.

June is still pleasant (25-30 °C) but the heat rises quickly. It's the last comfortable month before the summer heatwave. Cultural and music festivals begin (Veranos de la Villa in Madrid).

July and August are demanding in Madrid and the lowland cities: temperatures regularly exceed 38-40 °C, sometimes 42 °C during the heatwaves (olas de calor) that strike the Meseta with increasing frequency. Spaniards themselves flee to the coast. If you visit in summer, concentrate sightseeing in the early morning (before 11am) and the evening (after 8pm), and lean into Madrid's unique nocturnal atmosphere.

September and October are the most recommended months for a first visit. The heat dissipates gradually, the light over the Meseta turns golden and soft, and Madrid regains its energy after the August exodus. The sea is just a few hours away by train if lingering warmth makes you crave the coast.

Winter (November-March) is the season for museums. Madrid is ideal for a cultural long weekend: the Prado and Reina Sofía without excessive queues, warm restaurants, Christmas markets in December. It's cold (2-8 °C) and the sierra wind can be sharp, but the city is alive and prices are low.
