The best periods

The best time to visit Saint Martin is December to April (dry season — le carême).

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Saint Martin?+
No visa is required: Saint Martin is a French overseas collectivity (COM), an integral part of the French Republic. A valid French or EU national ID card is sufficient for French and EU nationals. No customs formalities. Note: the island is shared between France (north) and the Netherlands (south, Sint Maarten) — there is no physical border, circulation is free. Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) is on the Dutch side; you automatically cross to the French side by taxi or car (15-30 min). Non-EU nationals enjoy 90-day visa-free entry with a valid passport.
When is the best time to visit Saint Martin?+
The dry season, locally called 'carême', runs from December to April: maximum sunshine, brief rains, refreshing trade winds, temperatures of 24-29 °C, sea at 26-27 °C. May is an excellent shoulder season (still favourable weather, lower prices). Strictly avoid September-October, peak of the hurricane season: Saint Martin is one of the most exposed Caribbean islands, as tragically shown by Hurricane Irma (Category 5, September 2017). July-August remain busy due to French school holidays, despite more unsettled weather.
How much does a Saint Martin trip cost from Paris?+
The main cost is the Paris–SXM flight: €600-900 return in low season (May-June, September-November outside holidays) on Air France, Air Caraïbes or KLM via Amsterdam; €1,000-1,400 in high season (December to March, July-August). On site, plan €130/day/person in comfort: hotel or villa (€90-150/night for two), essential car hire (€40-65/day), Grand-Case restaurants (€35-70/person for dinner) or Orient Bay lolos (€15-25). For a week for two people excluding flights, budget around €1,800-2,500.
What's the difference between the French and Dutch sides?+
The two sides share the same island but offer very different atmospheres. The French side (north, 53 km²) is more peaceful, refined and food-focused: Marigot (Creole capital, marina), Grand-Case (gastronomic capital), Orient Bay (iconic beach), Anse Marcel (discreet luxury). The Dutch side (south, 34 km²) is livelier, more Americanised and commercial: Philipsburg (duty-free shopping, cruise ships), Maho Beach (airport, casinos, beach bars), Simpson Bay (nightlife). SXM airport is on the Dutch side — most visitors land there and head to the French side. Dual currency (EUR and USD) accepted everywhere, with no checks between the two territories.
Is Saint Martin still affected by Irma (2017)?+
Hurricane Irma (September 2017, Category 5) devastated Saint Martin (95 % of buildings damaged, 11 dead on the French side). Reconstruction is now largely complete — almost all hotels, restaurants and tourist infrastructure have reopened, often renovated. Some traces remain in places (ruins in the Oyster Pond area, some hotels that never reopened), but the tourist experience is entirely normal. The hurricane risk remains Saint Martin's specificity — prioritise the dry season (December-May) and avoid September-October. Follow Météo-France Antilles bulletins in case of threat. Hotel evacuation protocols are well-tested since Irma.

Our verdict

Saint Martin is one of the jewels of the French Antilles — an 87 km² island that concentrates 37 beaches, an exceptional gastronomic scene (Grand-Case) and the unique experience of a dual Franco-Dutch sovereignty with no physical border. For French travellers, it's the chance for a 7-10 day beach-and-gastronomy stay within the comfortable framework of a French COM: no visa, no currency change, French law, Carte Vitale valid. The constraints exist — island highly exposed to hurricanes (Irma 2017 still haunts memories), expensive peak-season flights, high cost of living — but they don't spoil the magic of a destination that brings together Caribbean beaches, top-tier Creole cuisine and a unique Franco-Anglo-Dutch culture. Prioritise January to April for perfect weather, May for the best value for money, and base yourself on the French side (Grand-Case or Orient Bay) for the most authentic experience.
