West Coast Réunion

Réunion's beach resort: turquoise lagoon protected by 25 km of coral reef, white-sand beach at L'Hermitage and humpback whale watching from June to October.

4.70

The West Coast is the only coastline of Réunion to offer a truly classical beach experience — white sand, protected lagoon, easy snorkelling, hotels at the water's edge, restaurants open to the sunset. The secret lies in the coral reef that borders the coast for 25 kilometres between Saint-Gilles and Étang-Salé, creating an inner lagoon with calm, shallow turquoise waters (1 to 3 metres deep), away from the risks of ocean swell and the shark presence that weighs on other coasts of the island.

The resort of Saint-Gilles-les-Bains is the tourist heart of the coast. A former fishing port converted into a beach hub in the 1970s, it combines a lively marina, seafront restaurants, 4-5 star hotels (Lux Saint-Gilles, Hôtel Le Récif, Iloha Seaview Hotel) and direct access to the lagoon. A few kilometres south, L'Hermitage-les-Bains and La Saline-les-Bains offer a quieter and more family-oriented experience, with a white-sand beach bordered by filaos (casuarinas) under which Réunionese picnic at weekends.

Saint-Paul, further north, has no lagoon beach but remains one of the most endearing towns on the island: former administrative capital until 1738, it shelters the marine cemetery where the poet Leconte de Lisle rests, and its Friday and Saturday morning market is one of the largest and most colourful in Réunion. At the southern end of the coastal zone, Saint-Leu has become the world capital of paragliding: its Maïdo slopes offer exceptional thermal conditions that attract pilots from around the world. It is also the seat of the Réunion Marine Reserve and the Kélonia aquarium, a spectacular refuge for marine turtles.

But the other signature of the west coast is the humpback whales. Every year, from June to October, these giants (up to 16 metres and 40 tonnes) come to give birth and mate in the protected waters between Saint-Leu and Saint-Gilles. Observation outings by boat, supervised by the Quiétude charter for respecting cetaceans, are among the world's finest whale watching experiences.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need on the west coast?+
Count 2 to 3 days to enjoy the west coast as part of a complete 10-14 day stay in Réunion: 1 day lagoon and snorkelling at L'Hermitage or La Saline, half a day humpback whale outing (June-October), half a day paragliding at Saint-Leu, half a day Saint-Paul market (Friday-Saturday) and marine cemetery. The rest of your stay will go to the cirques and the volcano.
Is the lagoon really safe for swimming?+
Yes, the lagoon between Saint-Gilles, L'Hermitage, La Saline and Étang-Salé is protected by a continuous coral reef that prevents access to large predators. Swimming there is authorised and safe, supervised by lifeguards (MNS) on equipped beaches. Outside the lagoon — on the rocky coasts of Boucan Canot, Trois Bassins, Saint-Leu outside VRR zone — swimming is banned by prefectoral order due to the shark risk. Strictly respect flags and signs: several fatal attacks since 2011.
When can you see humpback whales?+
The observation season runs from June to October, with a peak in July-August-September. Humpback whales come up from Antarctica to give birth and mate in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean — Réunion's west coast is their main migratory corridor. Boat outings (€60-80/person, 3h on average) leave from Saint-Gilles and Saint-Leu, supervised by the Quiétude charter which imposes respectful distances and observation times.
What are the best snorkeling spots?+
Three main zones. The Marine Reserve of Trou d'Eau at La Saline-les-Bains (access from the beach) is one of the best walk-in spots: parrotfish, angelfish, clownfish, leopard rays, sometimes green turtles. The beach of L'Hermitage in front of the outer reef is also excellent. The Marine Reserve of Cap La Houssaye (Saint-Paul) shelters corals and great biodiversity. Bring your mask and snorkel, or rent on site (€10-15/day). Avoid touching the coral, only use ecological sunscreen without oxybenzone.
Can you paraglide without experience?+
Yes, and it is one of the highlight activities at Saint-Leu. Most schools offer discovery tandem flights with an instructor (€90-110, 15-20 minutes of flight) that require no prior experience. Take-off from the slopes of Maïdo at 800-1,200 m, landing on the beach of Saint-Leu. Exceptional thermal conditions year-round (with a peak in austral winter). Recognised providers: Air Sensations, Parapente Réunion, Bourbon Parapente.
Which hotel to choose on the west coast?+
Depending on your budget and style. Upper end: Lux Saint-Gilles (5 stars, private beach, spa, €280-450/night), Hôtel Le Récif (4-star superior, direct lagoon access, €200-350/night), Iloha Seaview Hotel (4 stars, sea view, €180-280/night). Mid-range: Le Saint-Alexis (4 stars, Boucan Canot, €150-220), Akoya Hôtel & Spa (3-star superior, €120-180). Budget: many guesthouses at L'Hermitage and Saint-Gilles (€60-100/night), family gîtes. Book 2-3 months in advance in high season (July-August, Christmas).
Where to eat on the west coast?+
Saint-Gilles concentrates the tourist offer but also some very good addresses. Le Manta (modern Creole cuisine, port view), Loca Lova (seafood), Bonne Marmite (traditional carry) on the marina. At L'Hermitage, Chez Loulou for feet in the sand. At Saint-Leu, do not miss the chocolate-pastry shop Maison Lonchamp and the camions bars (mobile food stalls) on the seafront for samosas and bouchons. At the Saint-Paul market on Friday-Saturday: bols renversés (rice, meat, sauce — the street food option par excellence), bonbons piment, brochettes.

Our verdict

The West Coast is the perfect balance for a stay in Réunion that combines intense nature and beach comfort. This is where you will set up your base camp in the first days to recover from jet lag, before tackling the cirques and the volcano. The lagoon from Saint-Gilles to La Saline offers the only truly safe swimming zone on the island, the coral reef allows quality snorkelling, and the humpback whales from June to October alone justify a sea trip. On the accommodation side, the 4-5 star lagoon-side hotels (Lux, Iloha, Le Récif) are among the only real resorts on the island. Count on 2 to 3 nights on site — enough to enjoy the lagoon, do a whale outing and a paragliding lesson at Saint-Leu, without locking yourself into just beach comfort when the mountain awaits.
