When to go — Lisbon Region

The Lisbon Region enjoys one of the mildest Mediterranean climates in continental Europe, with more than 290 sunny days a year. That clemency makes it a year-round destination, but the optimal windows are well-defined.

April to June is the golden period for a first visit. Temperatures sit between 18 and 26 °C, the days are long, the vegetation of the Serra de Sintra is at its spring best and the tourist pressure has not yet reached its summer peak. May is the ideal month: near-guaranteed sunshine, flowers in abundance in the gardens of Sintra, sea still fresh (17-18 °C) but pleasant for terrace sitting and coastal walks. June brings the Festas de Lisboa, the popular street festivals celebrating Saint Anthony — one of the most authentic cultural events the city offers.

July and August are the busiest months. Sun is guaranteed, heat can be stifling (over 35 °C during heat waves), and Sintra as well as central Lisbon are under heavy tourist pressure. If you travel in summer, book your Sintra palace tickets several weeks in advance and aim to arrive before 9.30 am. The Cascais and Estoril coastal strip benefits from a cooler microclimate driven by the nortada, but this north-westerly wind can make afternoon beach sessions breezy and cool.

September and October restore the perfect balance: mellowed heat (22-26 °C), sea at its warmest of the year (20-22 °C), falling visitor numbers and lower rates. This is the most recommended period for combining cultural visits and beach time. The autumn light in Lisbon — golden, low-angled — is particularly beautiful for photography.

Winter (November to March) offers an intimate, authentic Lisbon. Rain is frequent but rarely prolonged, temperatures rarely drop below 10 °C, and the tourist sites are near-empty. It is the ideal time to explore museums without queues, discover neighbourhood restaurants without reservations and attend late-night fado sessions in the Mouraria houses. Avoid December for price spikes and Christmas-market crowds.
