The Lisbon Region lends itself to very different itineraries depending on how long you stay, but they all gravitate around two complementary poles: the capital itself with its unique architecture and neighbourhood life, and the natural and heritage crown that surrounds it — Sintra, Cascais and the Atlantic coast.
For a short trip (3-4 days), Lisbon alone can fill every waking hour. Two days in the city: the cobbled staircases of Alfama, the Castelo de São Jorge at sunrise, the Sé cathedral and the azulejo collections of the Museu Nacional do Azulejo, then Belém at dusk with the Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery catching the last light. A third day for Sintra, leaving early: Pena Palace, the Quinta da Regaleira's initiatory wells, then Cabo da Roca at sunset. Return via Cascais for dinner by the marina.
With a full week (7 days), the itinerary deepens considerably. After three days in Lisbon (add LX Factory on Sunday morning, the Ribeira market and a fado evening in Alfama), dedicate a day to Setúbal and the Arrábida beaches to the south — the turquoise water and limestone cliffs are among the most beautiful in Portugal. One full day for Cascais-Estoril, one for Sintra, and a final day wandering the miradouros and browsing the Chiado. This pace over seven days lets you feel the region rather than tick it off.
With ten to fourteen days, the Lisbon Region becomes the launchpad for a broader Portuguese journey. From the capital, head south to the Alentejo (Évora and its megaliths, the golden plains), explore Óbidos and its perfectly preserved medieval walls, or push north to Nazaré for the giant surf and fishing village atmosphere. Southward, the road to the Algarve begins with a night in Comporta or Melides, the new favourite stretches of wild Atlantic coast.
