Itineraries — The Visayas

The Visayas lend themselves to remarkably rich island itineraries, from express getaways to slow journeys that follow the rhythm of ferries and tides. The key is to choose your hub — most often Cebu — and to radiate from there toward the islands that fit the time you have available.

For a long weekend (4–5 days), don't try to split your energy between several islands: pick either Boracay or Bohol. Boracay from Manila is a one-hour flight plus a 20-minute ferry; you then have two full days on White Beach, with a side excursion to Puka Shell Beach or the sandbanks of the north. Bohol from Cebu (2 hours by ferry) gives you four days to explore the Chocolate Hills, see the tarsiers, dive at Panglao and wander down Alona Beach.

Over one week (7 days), the classic and satisfying combination strings both pearls together: arrival at Cebu, one night in the city to take in the Basilica del Santo Niño, early-morning ferry to Tagbilaran (Bohol) for three nights — Chocolate Hills, tarsiers, Alona Beach, diving at Balicasag. Then back to Cebu, flight to Caticlan and ferry to Boracay for three more nights: White Beach time, sunset from Diniwid, and a half-day sea excursion. Return flight from Caticlan to Manila or Cebu.

With 10 to 15 days, the Visayas reveal their depth. After Boracay and Bohol, add one or two nights at Siquijor — the mystical island, beautiful beaches and Cambugahay waterfalls. Stop at Moalboal (Cebu) to dive with the sardine run and the resident turtles. Advanced divers can extend to Malapascua to attempt a dawn thresher-shark encounter. This multi-island circuit can be done entirely by ferry, with Cebu as the redistribution hub — it just requires letting go of a rigid agenda and keeping a buffer night at each stop to absorb maritime delays.
