The optimal window for Arequipa and Lake Titicaca is the Andean dry season, May to September. Conditions are then perfect: permanent blue sky over Arequipa and Titicaca altiplano, maximum visibility on volcanoes (Misti, Chachani, Ampato) and the snow-capped Bolivian Royal Cordillera from Puno, Andean condor observation at Colca at its best (May-August). Daytime temperatures are pleasant (15-22 °C at Arequipa, 14-20 °C at Colca, 14-18 °C at Titicaca).
Nights are however very cold — one of the region's main constraints. Arequipa has 5-8 °C at night (manageable, heated hotels), but the Colca (3,800-4,900 m) drops to -5 to 5 °C, and Puno-Titicaca (3,812 m) to -5 to 5 °C or less in June-July. Warm clothing essential (down jacket, gloves, hat), accept night cold (limited heating in most altitude hotels).
June-August are the driest and busiest months (North American and European school holidays). Hotel rates Arequipa and Puno +20-30%, book 1-2 months ahead. May and September offer an excellent compromise: still-perfect conditions, slightly thinner crowds, slightly milder temperatures.
April, October and November correspond to shoulder season: rates down 20-30%, reduced crowds, still-favorable conditions. It's our price/conditions recommendation for flexible travellers.
The wet season (December to March) brings rain to Colca and Titicaca — muddy trails, more difficult hikes, sometimes fog on volcanoes and summits, less active condor observation at Colca (fewer updrafts). But it's also absolute low season: rock-bottom rates, much-reduced crowds, spectacular green Andean landscapes after rains, Lake Titicaca with high waters.
Events to note: Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria at Puno (2-18 February, one of South America's largest religious festivals, classified UNESCO intangible heritage in 2014, 150,000 participants in traditional costumes, dances, music). Arequipa festival on 15 August (Día de Arequipa, founding celebration, parades and cultural events). Local Inti Raymi at Puno on 5 November (Manco Cápac emerging from the lake).
