Peruvian Amazon

One of the world's richest biodiversities over 60% of Peruvian territory — Iquitos the Amazon metropolis, Tambopata ecotourism lodges from Puerto Maldonado, and Manu National Park (UNESCO 1987) treasure of South American wildlife.

4.60

The Peruvian Amazon covers 60% of the national territory — i.e. 770,000 km², equivalent to Germany and France combined. It's the world's second largest portion of Amazon rainforest after Brazil, and one of the planet's richest biodiversities: over 1,800 bird species, 500 mammals, 4,200 butterflies, 1,200 reptiles and amphibians, and probably several million insects still to discover. The region remains largely preserved — only 5% of Amazonian territory is exploited, versus 20% in Brazil. Three main gateways structure the tourist offer.

Iquitos (north-east, on the Amazon River) is the world's largest city inaccessible by road — 500,000 inhabitants, founded by Jesuits in 1757, prospered in the early 20th century thanks to rubber (Casa de Fierro signed by Gustave Eiffel), accessible only by plane (Lima 2h, €120-250 return) or cargo boat from Pucallpa (4-7 days). It's the historical and urban Amazon — Belén floating quarter (stilt huts, shaman market, ayahuasca), Malecón Tarapacá promenade facing the river, departure for the river lodges of the Amazon River (Ceiba Tops, Heliconia, Treehouse Lodge — 3 to 7 nights, pink dolphins, wildlife observation, indigenous communities). Rates €350-700/person for 3 nights all-inclusive in mid-range lodge.

Puerto Maldonado and Tambopata reserve (south-east, easiest access from Cusco) is the Amazon gateway #1 for Peru-Machu Picchu travellers. Cusco-Puerto Maldonado flight in 50 min (€100-180 return), then 1-3h motorized boat on the Tambopata River or Madre de Dios River to ecotourism lodges. The Tambopata National Reserve (275,000 ha) and Bahuaja-Sonene National Park protect one of the world's largest biodiversities. Iconic lodges: Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica (luxury, Relais & Châteaux), Posada Amazonas (Rainforest Expeditions, community), Refugio Amazonas, Tambopata Research Center (deepest, 7h by boat, parrot clay lick observation), Sandoval Lake Lodge. Rates €400-1,200/person for 3 nights all-inclusive (transfers + meals + activities + guide).

Manu National Park (UNESCO 1987, exceptional biodiversity ranked in world top) — 1.7 million hectares from Andes (4,000 m) to lowland Amazon (300 m), covering all ecosystems. It's the wildest and least accessible Amazon — access from Cusco by bus (10-12h by road + 2 days by boat) or occasional charter flight. Reserved for adventurous travellers and wildlife observation enthusiasts (jaguars, spectacled bears, giant otters, over 1,000 bird species). High cost (€1,200-2,500/person for 5-7 nights) and complex logistics — prefer Tambopata for a first Amazon contact.

Frequently asked questions

Iquitos, Tambopata or Manu: which to choose?+
For a first Peruvian Amazon trip, choose Tambopata from Puerto Maldonado — direct Cusco-Puerto Maldonado flight in 50 min (€100-180 return), quick access to lodges (1-3h by boat), excellent ecotourism offer quality (Inkaterra, Rainforest Expeditions), accessible rates (€400-800/person for 3 nights). Iquitos suits travellers attracted by historical and urban Amazon — unique Amazon metropolis, Belén floating quarter, real Amazon river (wider), different river lodges (€350-700/3 nights). Longer access (Lima-Iquitos flight 2h, €120-250 return, from Cusco passage through Lima necessary). Manu is reserved for adventurous travellers with time and budget — exceptional biodiversity (UNESCO 1987, world top), but difficult access (10-12h road from Cusco + 2 days boat), high rates (€1,200-2,500/5-7 nights), more raw experience. For 90% of travellers: Tambopata.
How many days for a successful Amazon experience?+
Minimum 3 nights in lodge, ideally 4 nights for a significant experience. Count additionally: 1 half-day transfers Cusco-Puerto Maldonado flight + boat outbound, 1 half-day boat return + flight. So minimum 5 days total (4 real days in Amazon). In 2 nights, the experience is too short (transfers weigh heavily, barely 2 full days on site). In 5-7 nights, you explore more deeply (most remote lodges like Tambopata Research Center accessible, multi-day outings, indigenous communities). For Manu, count minimum 5-7 nights (longer transfers). For Iquitos, 3-4 nights suffice (lodges closer to Iquitos).
What vaccines and health precautions for Peruvian Amazon?+
The yellow fever vaccine is strongly recommended (or even required if you transited through certain South American countries) — lifetime protection after one dose, to be done at an authorized centre in France minimum 10 days before departure. Other recommended vaccines: hepatitis A and B, typhoid, up-to-date DTP, rabies (extended stays or isolated lodge). Antimalarial: moderate risk in Tambopata and Manu, low in Iquitos city — discuss with your doctor (Malarone 3 days before to 7 days after, or doxycycline). Dengue: real risk, no vaccine (except prior history), prevention exclusively by repellents. Precautions on site: DEET 30%+ repellent everywhere on exposed skin and clothing, long-sleeved shirts and light trousers, water exclusively sealed bottled, no swimming in standing water. Complete first-aid kit (lodges far from any hospital). Travel insurance with repatriation mandatory.
Which lodges to choose at Tambopata?+
Several price segments. Luxury / Relais & Châteaux: Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica (most prestigious, 35 cabins on Madre de Dios bank 45 min by boat from Puerto Maldonado, €700-1,200/person for 3 nights all-inclusive, refined cuisine, canopy walkway, excellent naturalist guide). Comfort mid-high: Posada Amazonas (joint venture with Ese'eja Infierno community, community experience, 2h by boat, €400-650/3 nights, recommended for value), Refugio Amazonas (Rainforest Expeditions, 4h by boat, deeper, €500-800/3 nights, parrot clay lick observation). Adventure / deep: Tambopata Research Center (Rainforest Expeditions, deepest, 7h by boat, observation of macaw parrots on collpa, 5-6 night stay €1,000-1,500). Budget: Maldonado Inn (intra-Puerto Maldonado), Eco Amazonia Lodge (3 nights €300-450). Book 2-3 months ahead in high season.
How ayahuasca and Amazon shamanism?+
Ayahuasca is a millennial shamanic traditional decoction (mixture of the Banisteriopsis caapi vine and Psychotria viridis leaves containing DMT) used for therapeutic and spiritual purposes by Amazonian peoples. Iquitos is the world centre of tourist ayahuasca — dozens of centres offer ceremonies supervised by a curandero (shaman) over 1 to 14 nights (€200-2,000/stay). Effects are powerful (visions, purges, deep introspection), sometimes trying — strict dietary preparation before (no alcohol, no spices, no sugar 1 week before), context imperative (experienced curandero, serious centre, medical support recommended). Real risks: psychiatric accidents, dangerous drug interactions (notably SSRI antidepressants), fraudulent centres. Prefer recognized centres with verified recommendations (Templo de la Luz, Nihue Rao, Riosbo). Not a light tourist decision — only if deep personal approach.

Our verdict

The Peruvian Amazon is Peru's nature experience par excellence — perfect complement to the cultural Cusco-Machu Picchu experience for travellers with 16-21 days. Our recommendation: Tambopata from Puerto Maldonado is the best gateway for a first Peruvian Amazon trip — direct flight from Cusco (50 min, €100-180 return), quality ecotourism lodges (Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica luxury, Posada Amazonas family, Refugio Amazonas authentic), 3-4 nights enough for significant experience (boat transfers + activities). Rates €400-800/person for 3 nights all-inclusive in mid-range lodge. Travel from May to October (dry season, fewer mosquitoes) for most, or December-March (high river waters) for maximum navigation and wildlife visible by boat. Yellow fever vaccine strongly recommended.
