Things to do — Mérida

Mérida concentrates enough cultural and gastronomic richness to easily fill three to five days of itinerary.

The Centro Histórico is the obvious first stop. The Cathedral of San Ildefonso (1598), one of the oldest in the Americas, anchors the eastern side of the Plaza Grande. The Casa de Montejo (south side), built in 1549 by the city's founder, is a Spanish Plateresque masterpiece — its sculpted facade showing conquistadors standing on Maya heads is an eloquent symbol of the colonial encounter. The Palacio Municipal and Palacio de Gobierno (with the murals of Fernando Castro Pacheco depicting Yucatec history) frame the square. The Paseo de Montejo, Mérida's great Haussmann-style boulevard lined with henequen-era mansions (late 19th–early 20th century), is the evening promenade par excellence.

The markets are the soul of Mérida. The Lucas de Gálvez market (two blocks from the zócalo) is the largest and most authentic: tropical fruits (mamey, guanábana, pitahaya), spices, handwoven hammocks and cochinita pibil served from 6 a.m. by the vendors. The Bazar de Artesanías sells regional crafts (hand-embroidered huipiles, pottery, locally made panama hats). The Santa Ana market is quieter and ideal for breakfast.

The excursions from Mérida constitute the other half of the experience. Uxmal (80 km, 1 hour) is the most architecturally elaborate Maya site in the Yucatán: the Pyramid of the Magician and the Governor's Palace showcase Puuc style at its peak. Chichén Itzá (120 km, 1h30) is the most-visited Maya site in the world — plan to arrive at opening (8 a.m.). The Puuc Route cenotes (Lol-Há, Xtacumbilxunán) are far less crowded than those of Tulum. The north coast (Celestún, the pink flamingo reserve) is reachable in two hours for a sunset boat trip. Izamal, the yellow city, is nicknamed the 'city of three cultures' for its Franciscan convent built on the foundations of a Maya pyramid — an excellent day trip 70 km from Mérida.
