Hokkaido

When to go — Hokkaido

Hokkaido delivers four radically different seasons, each rewarding for distinct reasons. The golden rule: avoid spring (March-May) if you can — snow melts into mud, mountain roads are still closed and nature has not yet come into bloom.

Winter (January-February) is the prime season for two reasons. First, the Sapporo Snow Festival (early February) is one of the most spectacular winter festivals in the world, with monumental snow and ice sculptures in Odori Park. Second, Niseko offers a light, dry powder (*Japow*) that Australian, Canadian and Japanese skiers travel from across the world to find. Book three to six months ahead for accommodation and flights during the Snow Festival.

Summer (July-August) is the second great season. While the rest of Japan swelters at 35 °C with 80% humidity, Hokkaido enjoys mild temperatures (17-26 °C) and noticeably drier air. Mid-July is the ideal moment for Furano's lavender fields, the island's most photogenic highlight. Hikes in Daisetsuzan National Park (alpine passes, wildflower meadows, high-altitude onsen) are accessible from July to mid-September.

Autumn (September-October) is often the least-known but one of the most beautiful seasons. Hokkaido's momiji precedes the rest of Japan's by three to five weeks: mountains turn red and gold from late September in Daisetsuzan, creating spectacular landscapes without the sakura-season or summer crowds. Seasonal seafood — crabs, salmon returning upriver — is at its peak.
