Moorea

Things to do — Moorea

Moorea offers exceptional activity diversity for a 134 km² island.

The Opunohu belvedere (Belvédère, 240 m altitude) is the absolute essential: accessible by car from Opunohu Bay via a winding forest road (15 min from Vaiare port), it offers the iconic panoramic view over the two bays of Cook and Opunohu framed by the central Mont Rotui. Ideally done at sunrise (minimal crowds, golden light) or late afternoon. On the way, do not miss the marae Titiroa and Ahu o Mahine (sacred Polynesian vestiges).

The island tour by car or scooter (60 km, paved circular road) is an ideal half to full day: Cook Bay, Opunohu Bay, belvedere, marae Titiroa, Temae public beach (the island's most beautiful, white sand and turquoise lagoon), Afareaitu waterfall (5 min walk from the road, possible swimming).

Snorkelling and lagoon excursions are essential. Motor pirogue excursion (€60-100/person, half or full day): swim with stingrays and lemon sharks at the 'ray bank' near Tiahura, snorkel at the coral garden, observation of green turtles.

Humpback whales (July-October) are Moorea's signature experience. Specialised operators (Dr. Michael Poole, Moorea Ocean Adventures, Lagoon Aventure): boat observation (€100-150/person, half day) or supervised in-water swim with the whales (€180-250/person, half day) — strictly regulated. A powerful and emotional experience.

Hikes: Three Coconuts pass (3 h round trip between Cook Bay and Opunohu Bay — moderate, beautiful panoramas), Mont Rotui ascent (899 m, 5-6 h, demanding trek for experienced hikers), belvedere trail (1 h round trip from the car park).

Bottle diving: several interesting sites around Moorea — Tiki Point, Tema Pass, Opunohu Canyons. Clubs: Moorea Blue Diving, Top Dive Moorea, Bathy's Diving. Prices: €60-90/dive.
