The château visit (1h30-2h with free HistoPad, tablet reconstituting 16th-century furnished rooms) is the absolute essential. Highlights: the double-helix staircase (two interlaced staircases that rise to the same place without people crossing paths — attributed to Leonardo da Vinci), the panoramic terrace at the top (exceptional view of the 282 ornamental chimneys and turrets), the François I chamber, the royal chapel. The French formal gardens (restored in 2017 according to original 17th-century plans) are to see absolutely. The enclosed park (5,440 hectares, Europe's largest enclosed park) can be visited on foot (marked trails), by bike (rental on site €12-18/day, 12 km of paths), by boat on the Cosson canal (rental €15/30 min), or by horse-drawn carriage (guided visit €20/person). Wildlife observation: 1,000 wild deer, wild boar, mouflons — guided outings at dusk (May-October, €15-25). Summer: equestrian shows at the Maréchal de Saumur stables (€35, 2 pm and 4 pm), nocturnal sound and light in the courtyard (Saturdays in July-August, €18).
