Essential activities at Uluru.
Sunrise over Uluru (free, absolute signature experience #1): from Talinguru Nyakunytjaku Sunrise Viewing Area (north-east, plan 30 min walk from parking, cool temperatures in winter — bring fleece). Uluru passes in minutes from violet/grey shadow to deep ochre, then bright red, finally flamboyant orange. 20-30 min spectacle. Arrive 45 min before official sunrise.
Sunset over Uluru (free, signature experience #2): from Sunset Viewing Area (west, parking and benches available). Australian wine and cheese self-service for those bringing their own food. Arrive 30 min before official sunset.
Base Walk (10.6 km circular around Uluru, 3-4h, easy but long, free): follows the monolith's entire base, offering extraordinary changing perspectives. Allows observation of Mutitjulu caves (ancient Aboriginal rock art zone), Mutitjulu water hole (precious refuge for desert wildlife), Kuniya reliefs (associated with Anangu Dreamtime). Leave early (5am-6am summer, 7am winter) to avoid heat. Bring 2 L water minimum per person. Photo-prohibited zones clearly signed — absolutely respect.
Uluru Cultural Centre (free, open year-round at park entrance): explains Anangu culture, Tjukurpa, 1985 return history. Authentic Aboriginal art shop (dot paintings, didgeridoo, sculptures — support Anangu artists directly). Activities guided by Anangu themselves: dot painting (workshop AUD 50-90/person, 1-2h, unique experience), boomerang making, bush tucker (traditional Aboriginal cuisine, tasting AUD 50-100), Mala Walk (30 min guided hike, free with Anangu ranger some mornings).
Sounds of Silence dinner (AUD 220-250/person): signature stay experience. Champagne aperitif atop a dune with panoramic Uluru view at sunset, gourmet modern Australian cuisine buffet dinner (kangaroo, barramundi, lamb, Australian wines) under stars, guided starry sky observation by astronomer (Uluru is certified Dark Sky Place, Milky Way visible to naked eye). Mandatory booking 2-3 months ahead (sounds-of-silence.com.au). More exclusive variants: Tali Wiru (AUD 385/person, more intimate, max 20 people, refined gastronomy), Field of Light dinner (AUD 250-350 with dinner, or AUD 60 entry alone to Bruce Munro installation of 50,000 monumental solar lamps).
Kata Tjuta (the Olgas, 50 km from Uluru, 30 min drive): 36 distinct rock domes, formed by the same geological process but composed of more resistant conglomerate (cemented pebbles). Highest point Mount Olga 546 m. The Valley of the Winds hike (7.4 km circular, 3-4h, moderate to difficult with steep slopes) crosses the domes and offers extraordinary perspectives. Shorter alternative: Walpa Gorge Walk (2.6 km, 1h, easy, in a gorge between two domes).
Sunset camel ride (from Uluru Camel Tours, AUD 130/person for 1h): typical Australian experience on dromedaries imported from Middle East in 19th century to explore the Outback. Walk in dunes with Uluru or Kata Tjuta view depending on route.
Panoramic helicopter flight over Uluru and Kata Tjuta (from Ayers Rock Helicopters, AUD 180-280/person for 15-30 min) — spectacular perspectives ground walking doesn't allow, visualisation of real size of both formations.
Astronomy: Uluru is one of the world's most beautiful night skies. Milky Way extraordinarily visible to naked eye, Southern Cross (southern hemisphere constellation), Magellanic Clouds, passing satellites. Astronomical tours guided by astronomers AUD 80-150/person (Astro Tours, Uluru Astronomy Tours). But also to see simply by lying in the desert at camping or from your terrace.
