The best time to visit United States is varies by region — spring and autumn overall.

Avr, Mai, Sep, Oct

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a visa for the United States?+
No, French citizens benefit from the Visa Waiver Program for tourist or business stays under 90 days. However, the ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is mandatory before any boarding — online formality on esta.cbp.dhs.gov, $21, to request at least 72 hours before departure. ESTA is valid 2 years (or until passport expiry) and authorises multiple entries of 90 days max. The biometric passport is mandatory. For travellers who have been since 2011 in Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, Yemen, North Korea or Cuba, ESTA is refused — a classic B1/B2 visa will be required ($180, embassy appointment, 2-6 month wait).
What is the best time to visit the United States?+
It depends entirely on the region. April-May and September-October are the universal window (pleasant weather almost everywhere, reasonable fares). Summer (June-August) for Western national parks (Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier — roads open only at that period) and New England. Winter (November-March) for Florida, Southern California, Hawaii (escape European cold) — but New York is freezing and Western parks largely closed. New England foliage (mid-September to mid-October) is one of the world's most beautiful autumn spectacles. Avoid the hurricane season (June-November) in Florida and Gulf Coast.
How many days for the United States?+
No single trip can cover the country. Target 1 to 2 regions maximum per visit. 10-14 days for the East Coast (New York 5 nights + Boston 2 + Washington 3, Acela train), for California (LA 4 + San Diego 2 + SF 3 + Yosemite 2), or for Florida (Miami 4 + Keys 2 + Orlando 4). 14-21 days for the classic Western road trip (Las Vegas → Grand Canyon → Monument Valley → Bryce → Zion → LA → SF → Yosemite). 10 days for Hawaii (Oahu 4 + Maui 4 + Big Island 2) or for the Southern music route (New Orleans 4 + Memphis 3 + Nashville 3).
What's the budget for the United States?+
Reference budget €150/day/person for a comfortable stay, but costs vary widely by region. New York and California: €200-250/day minimum (3* hotel €180-280/night, dinner €30-60/person, transport €15-30/day). Western national parks: €100-150/day (motel €80-150/night, picnic and diner, car hire €50-80/day). Florida: €130-180/day. Hawaii: €200-300/day (very expensive). Return Paris flights: NYC €450-1,100, LA €700-1,500, Miami €600-1,100, Hawaii (via LA) €900-1,800. Mandatory 15-20% tips at restaurants, $1-2/bag, $5-10/day hotel staff. Travel insurance with $1M medical cover essential (€50-150 depending on duration).
East Coast or West Coast: where to start?+
East Coast (New York, Boston, Washington) for a first urban and cultural trip — short direct flights (8h from Paris), tolerable jet-lag (-6h), world metropolis (NYC), colonial heritage (Boston, Philadelphia), Capitol and free Smithsonian museums in Washington. Ideal for 10 days, Acela train between cities, no car needed. West Coast (California + parks) for nature and road trip travellers — longer flights (11h30), heavier jet-lag (-9h), essential car hire, huge distances (LA-SF 620 km, Vegas-Grand Canyon 4h), but breathtaking landscapes (Yosemite, Big Sur, Grand Canyon) and mythical cities (Hollywood, San Francisco). Ideal for 14-21 days. Our advice: East Coast first for ease, West Coast for a second visit and the epic dimension.

Our verdict

The United States is a country-continent you don't visit but explore region by region. Golden rule: never try to cram New York + Los Angeles + Grand Canyon + Florida into two weeks, you'll burn the budget on domestic flights and energy on jet-lag. Our recommendation for a first trip: New York + Washington + Boston (10 days cultural East Coast, direct flight from Paris), California + Las Vegas + Grand Canyon (14 days Western road trip, LA → San Diego → Las Vegas → Grand Canyon → San Francisco), Florida (10 days beach + Disney, Miami + Keys + Orlando), or Hawaii (10 days tropical archipelago). For a musical trip, combine New Orleans + Memphis + Nashville (10 days, jazz to country route). Favour April-May or September-October for universally pleasant weather, summer for Western national parks only, winter for Florida/Hawaii/Southern California. Book ESTA ($21) at least 72h before departure. Take out a minimum $1M medical travel insurance — non-negotiable. And remember in the US, tipping (15-20% at restaurants, $1-2/bag, $5-10/day for hotels) is not a bonus but essential staff income.
