Reynisfjara beach (5 km west of Vík via Route 215, free parking). Photograph the black sand, the Reynisdrangar stacks (rocks rising from the ocean 100-200 m), and enter the Hálsanefshellir cave (on the right as you arrive on the beach) to admire the most perfect basalt columns in Iceland. Strictly respect safety instructions: never go down on the wet sand, never turn your back to the ocean, stay more than 30 m from the edge. 30 min to 1 h on site.
Vík village (on Route 1). Climb the red church perched on the hill for the panorama (5 min walk from the church car park). Wander through the village (5-10 min). Lunch or dine in one of the restaurants (Suður-Vík, Smiðjan Brugghús, Black Beach Restaurant at Reynisfjara). Shop at the Krónan supermarket at the village entrance (8:30am-9pm). 30-60 min in the village.
Dyrhólaey peninsula (5 km west of Vík via Route 218, free). Park at the top car park (sometimes closed during nesting season to preserve puffins — alternative: car park below). Marked path to the lighthouse and the Dyrhóláey rock arch. Exceptional panorama over Reynisfjara beach, Reynisdrangar stacks and Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Puffin observation between May and early August, ideally in late afternoon (4pm-10pm). 30-60 min on site.
Hjörleifshöfði (15 min east of Vík via Route 1, gravel track to the site). Former volcano turned into an isolated hill in the middle of the coastal plain. Houses the Yoda Cave (Gígjagjá in Icelandic) — iconic rock formation for Star Wars fans (the cave silhouette resembles Yoda's head). Free access, 30 min hike from the car park.
Sólheimajökull (15 km west, Mýrdalsjökull glacier tongue). Free viewpoint (200 m walk from the car park). To walk on the ice, book a guided glacier hike (€90-150/person, 3-4 h, equipment provided).
Optional excursions: Kirkjufjara beach (right next to Dyrhólaey, access forbidden in some seasons to protect nestings), Mýrdalsjökull glacier super-jeep excursion (3-4 h, €200-300/person), quad on the black coast (2-3 h, €150-250/person with Arcanum Tours).
