Western Parks

One of the world's greatest reservoirs of natural landscapes — Grand Canyon (1,829 m deep), Yellowstone (the world's first national park, 1872), Yosemite (sequoias, El Capitan, Half Dome), Zion (vermilion canyon), Bryce (red hoodoos), Monument Valley (iconic American Western mesas), with Las Vegas as an oversized base camp.

4.90

The Western American Parks form one of the world's largest natural landscape reservoirs — unique concentration of canyons, mesas, geysers, sequoia forests, deserts and mountains spread across 5 states (Utah, Arizona, Nevada, Wyoming, Montana) covering the equivalent of all France. This region inspired the very concept of national park (Yellowstone created in 1872 by President Ulysses S. Grant, world's first), forging American Old West mythology (Western, Route 66, Plains Indians), and remains today the ultimate US road trip pilgrimage.

The region organises around several complementary sets. Las Vegas (Nevada, 660,000 inhabitants, 2.3 million metro, 40 million visitors/year) is the oversized and improbable base camp — artificial casino-city in the Mojave desert, the Strip (Las Vegas Boulevard) aligns 4.3 km of mega-resort hotel-casinos thematic (Bellagio fountains, Venetian canals, Caesars Palace antiquity, Mirage volcano, Wynn luxury, MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, Aria, Cosmopolitan). Cirque du Soleil shows, resident concerts (Adele, U2, Bruno Mars), boxing (MGM Grand Garden Arena), NHL (Vegas Golden Knights T-Mobile Arena), NBA from 2026 (Vegas Aces WNBA already), Formula 1 (Las Vegas Grand Prix since 2023, November). Grand Canyon National Park (Arizona, 4h drive from Vegas) — absolute must, 446 km long, 29 km wide, 1,829 m deep, one of the world's most impressive natural landscapes, 6 million visitors/year. Colorado Plateau and Utah parks: Zion (vermilion canyon, vertiginous Angels Landing hike), Bryce Canyon (red hoodoos, unique rock formations), Arches (2,000 natural arches including Delicate Arch), Canyonlands (canyons and mesas), Capitol Reef (160 km geological fault), Monument Valley (iconic mesas, Navajo land, John Ford and his Westerns), Antelope Canyon (photographic slot canyon, Navajo land Page). Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming-Montana-Idaho, 9,000 km²) — world's first national park (1872), UNESCO site, active supervolcano, 50% of world's geysers (Old Faithful), Grand Prismatic Spring (unreal colours), bison and grizzlies, Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Grand Teton (Wyoming, adjacent Yellowstone, Tetons range). Glacier National Park (Montana, Canadian border, Going-to-the-Sun Road).

The pitch is clear: this is the par excellence mythical road trip US region. Plan 14-21 days for the classic loop Las Vegas → Grand Canyon → Page → Monument Valley → Arches → Bryce → Zion → Las Vegas. Essential car rental, SUV recommended, significant distances (Las Vegas-Grand Canyon 4h, Grand Canyon-Monument Valley 3h, Bryce-Zion 1h30). Favour May-June or September-October to avoid summer heat. Book Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Yellowstone lodges 6 months ahead.

Frequently asked questions

How many days for the Western Parks?+
Minimum 14 days for the classic loop. Ideally: Las Vegas 2 nights (Strip, Cirque du Soleil show, helicopter Grand Canyon from Vegas option $350), Grand Canyon South Rim 2 nights (sunrise and sunset over canyon, Bright Angel or South Kaibab hike), Page 1 night (Antelope Canyon $70-100 with mandatory Navajo guide, free Horseshoe Bend), Monument Valley 1 night (Navajo land, 4x4 tour $80-150), Moab/Arches 2 nights (Delicate Arch, Canyonlands Island in the Sky), Bryce Canyon 1 night (Sunrise Point, Navajo Loop), Zion 2 nights (Angels Landing if permit, The Narrows), return Las Vegas. In 21 days, add Death Valley + Sequoia + Yosemite + return to San Francisco (Western parks + California combo). Yellowstone is a separate trip (Bozeman MT or Jackson Hole WY direct from Paris via US hub, 7-10 days).
Las Vegas to Grand Canyon by helicopter or car?+
By car recommended for those who want to enjoy Grand Canyon more than a day. 430 km via I-40 + AZ-64, 4-4h30 drive. South Rim accessible year-round. Stay at Tusayan (entrance, $100-200/night motels) or inside the park (El Tovar Hotel $280-450, 6-month booking). By helicopter from Las Vegas: excursion $250-450/person half-day (3-4h round trip, landing Bottom of the Canyon with champagne or West Rim Skywalk + Hoover Dam flyover), unforgettable experience but very short visit (1-2h on site). By plane + bus: Maverick Aviation option $250 (Vegas-Grand Canyon Airport flight + bus in park + lunch + return flight). By organised bus from Vegas $100-180 day trip but 12h with 8h drive — tiring. Our advice: if Grand Canyon is the main reason, car minimum 2-3 nights. If brief stop in Vegas road trip, helicopter from Vegas.
Which national park in winter?+
In winter (November-March), many parks are closed or very limited. Year-round accessible: Grand Canyon South Rim (Arizona, magical snowy landscapes, reduced crowds, 5-15°C daytime but -5 to 0 at night), Death Valley (California, perfect 15-22°C vs 50°C in summer, rare crowds), Joshua Tree (California, pleasant desert 15-20°C), Zion (Utah, 8-15°C, possible snow), Bryce Canyon (Utah, magical under snow, 0-10°C daytime, plan crampons), Saguaro (Arizona, spring desert), Big Bend (Texas, perfect in winter), Everglades (Florida, ideal dry season). Largely closed in winter: Yellowstone (only northern Mammoth Hot Springs entrance open, rest accessible only by guided snowmobile), Glacier National Park (Going-to-the-Sun Road cut October to June), Yosemite Tioga Pass and Glacier Point (November-May, Yosemite Valley remains open but limited), Arches/Canyonlands (accessible but very cold). To observe wildlife (bison in full fur, wolves), Yellowstone by winter snowmobile ($300-500/day) is a unique experience.
How many months ahead for reservations?+
For Western Parks, plan significantly ahead. 6 months ahead: intra-park lodges (El Tovar and Bright Angel Grand Canyon, Old Faithful Inn and Lake Yellowstone Hotel at Yellowstone, Yosemite Valley Lodge and Curry Village at Yosemite, Zion Lodge), popular campsites (Mather Grand Canyon, Madison Yellowstone). 4-6 months: gateway town motels and hotels (Tusayan, Page, Moab, Springdale, Bryce, West Yellowstone), Antelope Canyon photographer tours (Lower Canyon Ken's Tours). 2-3 months: Yosemite Half Dome cables (February-March lottery for May-October season), Angels Landing hiking permit (mandatory lottery 2024), Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil shows and residencies. 1 month: Vegas gourmet restaurants (Le Cirque, Joël Robuchon, Picasso Bellagio), car rental (lowest prices booking 1-2 months). America the Beautiful Pass $80/year (purchasable online or at first park entry), covers all national parks and federal national monuments.
What budget for the Western Parks?+
Reference budget €180-250/day/person for a comfortable stay, more economical than California. Flights Paris-Las Vegas via stopover (LA, NYC, Atlanta) €800-1,400 return by season. Accommodation: Vegas Strip hotels €100-400/night (Bellagio €250-500, MGM €100-250, Stratosphere/Plaza €50-120), intra-park lodges (El Tovar €280-450, Old Faithful Inn €250-400, Zion Lodge €250-380), gateway motels €80-200/night (Tusayan, Page, Moab, Springdale). Park entries: $35/vehicle for 7 days (Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Zion, Bryce, Arches, Canyonlands), Antelope Canyon $70-100 with Navajo guide, Monument Valley $150-180 4x4 tour. America the Beautiful Pass $80/year very cost-effective (4+ parks visited). Food: diner breakfast $12-25, lunch $18-35, dinner $40-90 pre-tip (Vegas gastronomy $100-200/person). Transport: SUV rental $60-100/day, gasoline $3.50-4.50/gallon, 3,000-4,000 km the 14-day loop. Total 14 days for 2 people: €5,000-8,000 excl. flights.

Our verdict

Western Parks form one of the world's most beautiful road trips — the classic 14-day loop: Las Vegas (2 nights) → Grand Canyon South Rim (2 nights) → Page Antelope Canyon + Horseshoe Bend (1 night) → Monument Valley (1 night) → Arches Moab (2 nights, add Canyonlands) → Bryce Canyon (1 night) → Zion (2 nights) → Las Vegas. Favour May-June or September-October to avoid summer heat (Vegas 40-45°C, Grand Canyon Bottom 45°C) and enjoy reduced crowds. Fly Paris-Las Vegas via LA or NYC (mandatory stopover, 14-16h total, €800-1,400 return). Rent an SUV ($60-100/day) at Sixt or Enterprise at LAS. Book intra-park lodges (El Tovar Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon Lodge, Zion Lodge) 6 months ahead — otherwise stay at gateway town motels (Tusayan for Grand Canyon, Springdale for Zion, Page for Antelope, Moab for Arches). For Yellowstone, add a separate trip (3,500 km from Las Vegas — prefer direct flight to Bozeman Montana or Jackson Hole Wyoming). America the Beautiful Pass ($80/year, all parks) instead of paying $35/vehicle each entry.
