Southern Thailand
Limestone cliffs plunging into turquoise waters, white sand beaches and world-class coral reefs: Southern Thailand is the ultimate tropical escape.
Southern Thailand is the seaside and island face of the kingdom, where karst cliffs leap straight out of an emerald sea and where powder-white beaches seem to go on forever. This region concentrates the country's most iconic beach destinations: Phuket, the great southern island with the beaches of Patong, Kata and Surin; Krabi and its limestone cliff scenery — among the most spectacular in Asia; the Phi Phi Islands and the lagoon of Maya Bay.
The south splits geographically into two coasts on different weather calendars: the Andaman coast to the west (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi) is ideal from November to April, while the Gulf coast to the east (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) offers good conditions from January to September. This split allows flexible travellers to find a fine window somewhere in Southern Thailand almost any month of the year.
Beyond the postcard imagery, the southern Thai shoreline has a personality all its own. Bangla Road in Patong is a world unto itself; Railay's climbing scene draws athletes from every continent; Koh Tao quietly trains more PADI divers per year than almost any other dive site on earth. Whether you come for an all-inclusive honeymoon, a backpacker beach hop or a serious dive trip, the region delivers a calibre of marine experience hard to match within a single country.

Our verdict
Southern Thailand delivers a selection of coastal and island landscapes that ranks among the finest on the planet. Phuket and Krabi are the two natural gateways to the region, and it would be a shame to stop there: less-trafficked islands such as Koh Lanta, Koh Yao Noi and Koh Mak deliver a more intimate experience and remind you why most travellers fall in love with the region in the first place. Come November to April for the Andaman coast, April to September for the Gulf, and combine the two coasts for a complete southern itinerary.
Our take: Southern Thailand is best enjoyed at half-speed. The region rewards travellers who pick one or two bases and explore from them by long-tail boat, rather than those who try to tick off every island in a fortnight. Pair Krabi with a couple of nights on Phi Phi or Koh Lanta, or pair Phuket with a Phang Nga liveaboard, and you will leave with a far richer set of memories than if you had run yourself ragged chasing every beach on the map.
