The Marrakech-Safi region is visitable almost year-round, but the choice of season strongly conditions the comfort of your trip, mostly because of inland heat. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer perfect balance: Marrakech is pleasant to walk, gardens are in bloom, the Atlas can be hiked without too much snow and the coast around Essaouira gets soft, golden light. Temperatures sit between 20 and 28°C, ideal for stringing together medina, mountains and ocean. This is also peak tourist season: crowds are dense and rates climb, especially around UK and French school holidays — book early.
Summer (June to August) turns Marrakech into a furnace, with afternoon peaks routinely above 40°C. Medina visits become punishing at midday and you'll need to lean on early mornings and late evenings. The winning summer strategy is to flee the heat: Essaouira, perpetually cooled by the trade winds, is an excellent summer base, as are the higher reaches of the High Atlas.
Winter (December to February) is an underrated season: days are mild and sunny, perfect for discovering Marrakech at a quieter pace with snow-capped Atlas peaks on the horizon. Nights are cold, however, and traditional accommodation is often poorly heated — pack a good fleece. Skiing is even possible at Oukaïmeden.
Our recommendation: target April, May, October or November to enjoy the full diversity of the Marrakech-Safi region. In summer, recentre on Essaouira and the mountains; in winter, on Marrakech and its sunny surroundings.
Month by month, March and November are the mildest for Marrakech, April and October the most balanced for combining city, Atlas and coast. May bank holidays and the October half-term concentrate the crowds: shifting your trip by a few days often makes for a calmer experience. Finally, pack for the climate gap that defines the region: light clothing for the plain, warm layers for cold Atlas nights, and a windbreaker for the Essaouira spray.
