Things to do — Marrakech-Safi Region

The Marrakech-Safi region delivers a concentrated dose of Moroccan experiences, with its heartbeat in Marrakech. Jemaa el-Fna, listed on UNESCO's intangible heritage list, turns into a living stage each evening: storytellers, gnawa musicians, juice vendors and grill smoke take over the square as night falls. During the day, the labyrinthine souks showcase the excellence of local crafts — tanned leather from the medina, zellige tilework, colourful babouches and worked copper. The Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs and the Marrakech Museum round out a dense historical circuit, while the Majorelle Garden and the Menara bring a refreshing green pause at the heart of the red city.

Beyond the ramparts, the region opens onto fine escapes. To the east, the Ourika valley unrolls palm groves, Berber villages and waterfalls just 35 km from Marrakech — an ideal day-trip. Further on, the village of Imlil serves as the base for trekkers tackling Mount Toubkal (4,167 m), the roof of North Africa. The Aït Benhaddou valley and the High Atlas foothills also offer beautiful horseback or mule rides through a grand setting.

To the west, Essaouira and the Atlantic coast form the other magnetic pole of the region. The white-and-blue UNESCO medina, ringed by wind-battered ramparts, invites slow walks through alleys of art galleries and argan-oil stalls. The lively fishing port smells of grilled fish and iodine. On the vast sand beaches stretching south, surfers and kiters take advantage of strong, steady winds. Essaouira also hosts the annual Gnawa Festival each summer, a world-music landmark for the Marrakech-Safi region.

The Marrakech-Safi region further lends itself to a wide variety of activities: a sunrise hot-air balloon over the palm grove, quad-biking or camel rides in the Agafay desert, a spa day in a riad, or surf and kitesurf lessons on Essaouira beach. From adrenaline to pure idleness, this palette ensures Marrakech-Safi never gets stale, whatever your travel profile.
