Choosing the right moment to discover the Fes-Meknes region changes the experience hugely, since the seasons here are sharply contrasted. Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September-October) stand out as ideal: temperatures, mild to warm (20 to 28°C by day), make exploring the medinas and souks pleasant without summer's exhaustion. In spring, the Middle Atlas countryside and the farmland around Meknes turn vivid green and the light on the ramparts is particularly soft. Crowds are gentler than in Marrakech, even if extended weekends pull in visitors.
Summer (July-August) is hot and dry: thermometers regularly cross 35°C in the alleys of Fes el-Bali, making midday visits punishing. The workaround is to walk the medina early morning and late afternoon, reserving the hot hours for shaded breaks at a riad or over mint tea. Days are long, evenings are lively and cultural festivals dot the season — including the prestigious Fes Festival of Sacred Music, usually in late spring.
Winter (November to March) is cool, sometimes rainy, with cold nights: traditional riads, not always well heated, can surprise you. But this off-peak season has its charms in the Fes-Meknes region: peaceful medinas, golden light, gentler accommodation rates and a hushed atmosphere. The nearby Middle Atlas also takes on snow around Ifrane, almost alpine in feel.
Our recommendation: target April-May or September-October to explore the Fes-Meknes region under the best conditions. Whatever the season, plan modest, covering clothing for the medinas and a light fleece for evenings, often cool in spring and autumn.
Month by month, April and May offer the greenest countryside, September and October the warmest light on the medinas. March and November, cooler, suit travellers who handle heat poorly and seek calm. For religious holidays such as Ramadan — dates shift each year — check before booking: shop and restaurant hours change, but the night atmosphere of the medinas in the Fes-Meknes region takes on a particular intensity.
