Itineraries — Fes-Meknes Region

The Fes-Meknes region lends itself to very different itineraries depending on time and taste. For a short 1-2 day stay, focus entirely on Fes: one full day inside Fes el-Bali (Karaouiyine, Chouara tanneries, Bou Inania and el-Attarine medersa, the artisan souks), and a half-day for the Andalusian quarter and the ramparts. In the evening, dinner at a medina riad to soak up the atmosphere. This rhythm, dense but workable, gives a solid taste of what the Fes-Meknes region has to offer.

For 4 to 5 days, the ideal sequence opens with two full days in Fes, then a day combining Meknes, Volubilis and Moulay Idriss (the three sites are within an hour of each other). Day four can be either a deeper dive into the Fes medina or a Middle Atlas escape: the cedar forest of Azrou, the alpine-feeling resort of Ifrane or the lake of Dayet Aoua offer a striking contrast with the medina bustle. Return to Fes on day five for last-minute shopping and a farewell lunch.

With a full week, the region stretches comfortably. After Fes and the essential Meknes-Volubilis-Moulay Idriss day, two days in the Middle Atlas allow you to reach Midelt or Azrou, or to start the road south through the Ziz gorges. The Fes-Meknes region also slots beautifully into a wider Moroccan loop: arrive from Tangier or Casablanca by train, head south after Fes towards Marrakech via the Tichka pass, or branch toward Meknes and Rabat to round out the imperial cities circuit. Whichever route you choose, Fes-Meknes is the unmissable heritage stop of any Moroccan itinerary.

Whatever duration you settle on, a few principles help in the Fes-Meknes region: spend at least one full night in Fes to experience the medina at dawn, group Meknes and Volubilis on a single day since they share the same axis, and keep a half-day spare for the unexpected. A calm pace of two to three sites a day, no more, lets you fully savour this concentrate of Moroccan history.
