Lombok and the Gili Islands are sometimes described as the hidden face of Bali — only 35 km of sea separate them from the Island of the Gods, but the atmosphere is dramatically different: wilder, more authentic, less crowded. The region accommodates a wide range of itineraries, depending on whether you are coming for the diving in the Gilis, the empty beaches of southern Lombok or the volcanic adventure of Mount Rinjani. Many travellers spend a few days here as an add-on to a Bali trip and end up wishing they had given the region a full week or more.
For a short 4-5 day stay, focus on one or two of the Gili Islands: two or three days at Gili Trawangan for diving, snorkelling with turtles and the beach vibe, followed by a day at Gili Meno for the quieter pace. This is the perfect Bali extension. On a full week, combine the Gilis (3 days) and southern Lombok (2-3 days): Tanjung Aan with its two-tone sand and twin bays, Mawun's shallow turquoise water, and Gerupuk for surfers. The result is a balanced cross-section of Lombok and the Gili Islands. With 10 to 14 days, add the Rinjani trek — the 3-day/2-night summit climb is the single most memorable experience in the region and one of the most impressive volcanic hikes in Asia.
